League Member Profile With Nick Bolhuis

by Diane Stolte 0 comments

General

Meet league member Nick Bolhuis. Bolhuis joined the very first season of Ottawa Tuesday Black on week 2 and hasn't missed a day of axe throwing since (he's got the 2017 Attendance award to prove it). Bolhuis works as an electrician by day, a trade that lets him use his hands and knack for solving puzzles daily. When he's not throwing in one of his two leagues, he spends his time crafting custom axes for his fellow league members.

What started out as a fun pass time for himself, has turned into a staple of the BATL Ottawa league scene. Simply painting axes haven't been enough for Bolhuis, he's constantly searching for new techniques to create with. These include upcycling a microwave into a lightning machine and forging his own axe head in a campfire. Bolhuis is also down for a strong beer and a chat about the DC universe, his D+D Universe and new board games. And did we mention he was saved from his burning apartment by his handsome cat Balthazar? We're happy to have him as part of the family, Ottawa wouldn't be the same without Bolhuis at the Backyard Axe Throwing League!

"Instead of sending a(nother?) passive aggressive email, throw an axe instead. At Backyard Axe Throwing League, colleagues can relieve stress productively in a safe space with talented instructors."

That's some good advice from web blog Chicago Detours, who recommends a trip to BATL for your next corporate team building outing.  We’ve hosted parties for corporations large and small – CIBCDeloitteDesjardinsMLSE, TD Canada Trust, LinkedIn, and countless others.

Our private axe throwing events are for groups of 6 and up, and act as the perfect setting for your next team-building outing.  The sessions last from 1-2.5 hours and begin with one-on-one coaching and practice from our dedicated staff members – all of whom are up there with the best axe throwers in the world.  From there, we organize and put you through a round robin style tournament, followed by a single elimination playoff tournament to crown an axe throwing champion for the day.

BATL has 13 locations across North America, making it easy to book your next corporate outing with BATL, and find for yourself the unique thrill of throwing in axe in our safe and controlled environment.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League prides itself on being a strong social hub and positive corporate citizen in all communities in which we operate. Each location works directly with local charities on a monthly basis to support axe throwing fundraising activities.  On March 22nd, BATL Ottawa is teaming up with The United Way to host BATL for Mental Health.  "BATL for Mental Health is more than an axe-throwing tournament - it's also a unique and fun way to support United Way-funded mental health programs and services here in Ottawa."

BATL has sponsored dozens of non-profit organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters, the Children’s Foundation of Guelph and Wellington, Dear Jack Foundation, Federated Health Charities Campaign, Easter Seals, the Calgary Hitmen Community Caring Program and the Gloucester Emergency Food Cupboard, to name a few.  If you’d like to request BATL to support an upcoming non-profit fundraising event, please contact your nearest venue or info@batlgrounds.com for eligibility requirements.

Our nation's capital is a city with a lot to offer, so web blog Narcity compiled a list to help you make the most of the city - and naturally listed the Backyard Axe Throwing League in Ottawa as a must-visit destination. "From the splashes of salt on our jeans to the annoyance of putting on a jacket, there is no better way to unleash it than by throwing axes at BATL.

BATL Ottawa offers many ways to get involved with our sport (much like all of our locations across North America).  Our weekly leagues are what made us world famous, but each of our locations offers private group event bookings (perfect for adult birthdays, bachelor/bachelorette parties, corporate team building, holiday parties, and much more!) and public walk-in axe throwing sessions each weekend – for the more casual axe thrower.  All of this under the supervision of our coaches, the best axe throwers in the world, in a comfortable and unique setting.  It's time for Ottawa to join the #BATL!

BATL Staff Sunday with Brad Barter

Meet Brad Barter, a staff member at our Niagara location. It all started back in May of 2017. Barter was on a bus trip returning from a Rugby tournament in London and a text message came through. ‘Hey man, want to throw axes tonight?’ Who in their right mind would say no to that!? After dropping his first 30 axes, he finally stuck a bullseye. That was all it took to hook him for life.

In the Fall, Barter found out BATL Niagara was hiring. He was hired onto staff shortly after. Since then, Barter is the only staff member at Niagara to deliver his opening speech in flawless Russian. However, his version of Russian is just really loud English with hand gestures.

Outside of the Backyard Axe Throwing League, Barter moulds, young minds in high school and is an Aficionado of photoshop. He has an extremely rare collection of shoelaces and believes that Christmas isn’t complete until he sees Hans Gruber fall from Nakatomi tower in Die Hard. And yes, we painted his upper body green for dramatic purposes. Glad to have you on board, Barter.

Kiss The Cook Blog Features BATL

Kiss The Cook Catering recently featured BATL in its web blog - going through the history of The Backyard Axe Throwing League with Toronto GM Trevor Welsh.  "The founding stories of most successful businesses usually involve nose-to-the-grindstone innovation, a visionary idea and thousands of hours of dedication and toil. Rarely do those stories involve backyard axe throwing. But then, there aren’t many success stories like BATL..."

Kiss The Cook offers some of the best catering offerings around, serving all BATL locations in the GTA.  With 13 locations across North America, BATL offers an exciting venue to host any event - be it an adult birthday, bachelor/bachelorette party, corporate team outing, and much more - and offers both a varying array of foods at each venue as well as the option to have it catered.  Private event bookings get you a personal space for you and your group (perfectly suited for your food spread), not to mention one of our expertly trained coaching staff guiding you through a round robin tournament and playoff.  A visit to BATL will ensure a party your guests won't soon forget!

Thanks to Sponsors and NATF at 2018 NATC

Now that we've had a few days to process and recover, we'd like to thank the National Axe Throwing Federation and all of their sponsors - notably Beau's All Natural Brewing Company - for organizing an amazing 2018 All-Star Weekend, including the 7th annual National Axe Throwing Championship that BATL had the pleasure of hosting.

The best axe throwers in the world, 128 of them to be exact, came to BATL Toronto East and North from far and wide to compete in a day-long tournament.  In the end, BATL Pickering's own Straun Riley took the top spot (prize money included!) with an over-the-top performance, and a rubber match big axe clutch against BATL London's Aaron Gerrard proved to be the winning throw.

We'd like to thank everyone from all axe throwing locations across the world that came out to call The Backyard Axe Throwing League home for a day, and we are already eagerly counting down the days to the 8th annual National Axe Throwing Championship!

We recently had the pleasure of hosting Mike Bennet of On Target 4 Vets, a group dedicated to bringing wounded war veterans together through the power of sport.  Mike visited our BATL Nashville location with the co-founder of their organization Michael Paul to experience first hand the unique satisfaction of urban axe throwing.

At the Backyard Axe Throwing League, we’ve have taught a diverse range of people how to throw axes, ranging from the visually impaired, to elderly and those with mobility constraints.  We pride ourselves on being accessible to nearly anyone for both leagues and private axe throwing events, and with the best axe throwing coaches in the world, you'll be sure to be hitting bullseyes in no time.  Find a location nearest you and join the BATL!

Fashion and travel bloggers Wanderlust Girls recently paid a visit to BATL Nashville to check out our new digs, and to say they were instantly hooked would be an understatement.  Wanderlust Girl Abigail said it best herself:  "I don’t want to go sit at a bar and chit chat while I could be hurling hatchets… know what I mean? What an amazing stress reliever and all-around primal experience. We were riding such a high after this. Even though it seems so savage, it really was calming."

BATL Nashville has just moved into a new larger venue in East Nashville, providing Brentwood, Franklin, Nolensville, and the surrounding area with the indoor axe throwing experience that The Backyard Axe Throwing League is world famous for.  Every BATL location across North America offers multiple ways to get involved with our sport that is now sweeping the world: from the best weekly leagues and public walk-in sessions, to private group events for parties of 6 and up - perfectly suited for adult birthday parties, corporate team building, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and much more!  Visit our new location in Nashville today and join the BATL!
