Planning Your Next Corporate Team Building Outing

Axe Throwing at BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

With the last weeks of summer upon us, businesses all across North America are beginning to plan their holiday season corporate outings. It's never to early to start planning, after all. There are many things to consider when planning a corporate group outing for you and your team to ensure a memorable time for everybody involved. We've put together a list of some tips to keep in mind when planning your next company outing.

Figure Out The Basics

The first thing to consider is always the who, what, where, when, and why - as well as how many! What is your budget? In what city will the event be held? What type of venue would accommodate your needs? Who are the targeted external clients? What type of event will draw them in? An upscale cocktail event? Dinner? Fun interactive activity? Who will be attending from your company? Why is the event being held? What is the ultimate goal? Who will be responsible for inviting clients and RSVP management? Write down the answers to those questions before you start anything else.

Get Input From Your Staff

Not everybody loves surprises - so keep this in mind when planning your next corporate outing. It's unreasonable to think that all of your employees will have similar interests and likes, so getting a quick read of what might go over well can go a long way. Keep in mind that you're all not likely to agree on the same thing, but using valuable input from each of your employees can bring you closer to finding an activity that everybody can get behind.

Save The Date

Once the proposed date has been selected and city identified, check not only your calendar, but that of your industry and location of the event. Is there an industry conference scheduled at the same time? School breaks, religious holidays and other significant events can affect your attendance as well as the logistics of an event. Ideally you should plan your event at least eight weeks out, allowing for invite list development, Save the Dates to be sent six weeks out, invites to be sent four weeks prior to your event, with reminders two weeks in advance of the event.

Picking the Right Location

While the newest trampoline park on the outskirts of town may be appealing for your event, your venue should reflect your audience and the business purpose of the event itself. Take into consideration the commuting patterns in the city where your event is to be held. For instance, in Toronto, venues that are close to subway lines and GO Transit or Via Rail Canada trains draw large after-work crowds. Whereas in Ottawa, most people drive, so venues with easy access to major highways are preferred.

Make Sure Your Employees Needs Are Met

When setting up your invitations and RSVP options, be sure to provide and allow for information that makes your guests feel welcome. Make sure your guests can provide any dietary restrictions. Can they bring a partner or business associate with them? If so, make that clear. Are you providing valet parking? The more information you can provide at this point, the more welcome your clients will feel—and the less you’ll need to manage the night of the event!

Choosing Your Activity: Axe Throwing at BATL

There’s no one-size-fits-all solution for team-building activities. But by paying attention to the everyday routine of your team, getting employees involved in planning, and asking strategic questions, you can keep the eye rolls to a minimum.

With all these things considered, where do you go next? Gone are the days of traditional staff get togethers - and nothing quite breaks tradition like axe throwing. BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League was founded in a Toronto backyard back in 2006. What started as a personal passion sparked by a camping trip soon spread through word of mouth in Toronto, and today over 1 million people have experienced the thrill of throwing axes. The Backyard Axe Throwing League has never been more accessible and now boasts 13 venues across North America (Toronto, Kitchener, Pickering, Niagara Falls, Hamilton, Ottawa, and Calgary in Canada and Novi, Chicago, and Nashville in the United States - not to mention venues in Madison, Wisconsin; Houston, Texas; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Scottsdale, Arizona all set to open this year).

BATL is the perfect venue to host your next staff outing. Our private axe throwing events last 2-2.5 hours and are run in the safe and comfortable environment that BATL has become famous for by our expertly trained staff, who also happen to be the best axe throwers in the planet. They will run you and your guests through training to ensure that you're all sticking bullseyes before launching you into a round robin tournament, followed by a playoff (in order to crown a champion, of course). A little friendly competition is a key to a team building outing so if you're looking for the perfect event for your next corporate party, look no further than BATL. You can check out our event guide to learn more on how we can accommodate your team!

Venue Spotlight Featuring BATL Hamilton

BATL Hamilton Axe Throwing

For a long time it's been stuck in the shadow of its big sister down the QEW (Toronto), but over the past decade the City of Hamilton, Ontario - also known as the Hammer - has become a world class city of its own. Now a city of over half a million people, a big influx began due to it being a more affordable option than living in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, the list goes on - but it's not just cheap rent that is bringing people to this once thriving industrial steel city. Situated on the beautiful Niagara Escarpment, Hamilton and the surrounding area provides countless conservation areas, waterfalls, and trails for the outdoor-minded.

It's not just its the surrounding environment that gives Hamilton its charm. If you think the only restaurant scene in southern Ontario is in Toronto, then you obviously haven't visited Hamilton for a meal in some time. Hamilton has exploded in the past few years as a top Canadian culinary destination with a number of amazing restaurants and events that celebrate Ontario's rich bounty while remaining earnestly community-oriented. In addition to dining experiences, Hamilton also boasts many award winning breweries (Merit, Collective Arts, and Grain and Grit just to name a few), as well as a widely recognized cocktail scene (with places such as Bar Sazerac, Two Black Sheep, and L'etranger).

History Of BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

The Backyard Axe Throwing League pioneered the sport of urban axe throwing back in 2006, so it's no surprise that we're known across the world as the best at what we do. It all started with group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Little did they know that this innocent way to pass the time would soon evolve into the creation of a worldwide sport. Upon returning home to Toronto, BATL founder and CEO Matt Wilson decided to set up a target in his backyard and invite some friends over to show them just how cathartic throwing a sharp axe into wood could be. A point system was created, and soon enough a group of 8 friends would meet every week and engage in some friendly competition. 8 friends quickly grew to 16, and 16 quickly grew to 32. Before he knew it, Matt was hosting 2 full leagues of a total of 60+ per night in his backyard, not including all the spectators that would stop by to catch a glimpse of our exciting new sport.

Venue Spotlight Featuring BATL London

BATL The Backyard Axe Throwing League

The City of London, Ontario

While the name of the city and the major river located within it (the Thames River) may sound like a carbon copy of another world-class city across the pond, the City of London Ontario is a thriving and unique city that has much to offer. London got its start as a city back in 1855, and since then has grown to become one of Canada's largest urban areas with its own storied history. Since the end of World War II, London has experienced a growth unprecedented in its history. With the major annexation of 1961, which added 60,000 people to the city, London had grown close to a quarter of a million people in 1976, the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of its founding. Major physical changes in London's appearance have occurred. In the old city core, many of the landmarks of the past have gone to be replaced by modern developments - the McClary factory was demolished for Wellington Square, the Hotel London was replaced by the City Centre, the Covent Garden Market was enclosed by the Market Garden Parking Building, and a new Court House was finally constructed on a demolished two-block site.

New suburbs have appeared on the outskirts - Lockwood Park, Sherwood Forest, and Oakridge Acres. The old residential areas became threatened by the overuse of the automobile on streets meant only to accommodate horse and buggy. Recent planning decisions have however been carefully made to ensure that the character and integrity of the old city are maintained. Something which can only result in enhancing the urban environment and in making London a pleasant place for its present and future citizens.

The history of Axe Throwing at BATL

Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump.

Fast forward to 2015 when the Backyard Axe Throwing League joined forces with newly opened axe throwing venue Tomahawks to become BATL London - bringing our style of urban axe throwing to the masses of London, Ontario – and we haven’t looked back since! Over the past 3 years, BATL London has hosted people from all over South Western Ontario and taught them the ways of our sport, and it’s been a complete success. On top of that, BATL London is constantly engaging with our community, partnering up with local charities, local sports teams, and more.

If you have yet to experience the unique thrill of our sport, what are you waiting for? BATL London offers many ways to get involved with our unique brand of urban axe throwing. Outside of the London area? Not to worry, BATL boats 13 venues across North America, including Toronto, Kitchener, Pickering, Niagara Falls, Hamilton, Ottawa, and Calgary in Canada and Novi, Chicago, and Nashville in the United States - with more on the way this year.

Private Group Bookings at The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Our private group bookings are perfectly suited for any adult get-togethers - birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties, corporate team building, and much much more. Our private events last 2-2.5 hours and are run in the safe and comfortable environment that BATL has become famous for by our expertly trained staff, who also happen to be the best axe throwers in the planet. They will run you and your guests through training to ensure that you're all sticking bullseyes before launching you into a round robin tournament, followed by a playoff (in order to crown a champion, of course). A little friendly competition can go a long way, so gather your friends and come experience it for yourself!

Walk-in Axe Throwing

If you're looking for a more casual way to get involved, all 13 BATL venues across North America offer walk-in axe throwing each and every weekend. The Backyard Axe Throwing League offers axe throwing on a walk-in basis at designated times each week. Our coaches will be on hand to instruct those who have never thrown an axe before, and offer tips on technique for more experienced throwers looking to sharpen their skills. Similar to public skating, skiing or swimming – guests throw in a common area with other participants, and may need to make allowance for shared space based on friendly guidance from your BATL coach.

Weekly League Play

Our axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our staff - all resident axe pros. Each season consists of round-robin style tournament play, where you'll throw 28 games against other people in the league, culminating in a top 16 double elimination playoff on week 8. Our leagues are suitable for people of all skill levels, with staff on hand at all times ready to give you tips and tricks to make sure that you're hitting the bullseye. Joining an axe throwing league is a great excuse to get out of the house and engage in some weekly friendly competition. But more than that, it's a chance to meet new friends and be part of an extremely tight-knit community. At BATL, our mission is to show people the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots.

No matter how you choose to get involved, stop by BATL London and see for yourself what all the fuss is about!

Top Things To Do This Fall In Southern Ontario

Southern Ontario Axe Throwing

We know, we know - there is still plenty of Summer weather left this year. Thinking about fall is crazy, right? Canada is often known as a country of two seasons: winter and summer. However, fall in Canada (and especially in Southern Ontario) is truly a sight to behold. It also signals the beginning of the hockey season, which is a highly anticipated mark on the calendar for those of us north of the border. Trying to figure out how to best spend your time this fall in Southern Ontario? Let us guide you with our list of the best things to do.

1) Take A Drive Through The Niagara Escarpment

The Niagara Escarpment is a geological formation that extends from western New York State through Ontario to Michigan, Wisconsin and Illinois. It originated as a result of unequal erosion where a top layer of harder and more resistant dolomitic limestone overlays more easily eroded shale. The gradual erosion of the rock left behind dramatic cliffs and offers perfect fall views. In Ontario, the Niagara Escarpment features the Bruce Trail: Canada’s oldest and longest footpath that extends over 800 km (with side trails) from Niagara Falls in the South to Tobermory in the north. The entire area has been designated a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve due to its unique fauna and flora. A drive through the Niagara Escarpment is a fall must in Southern Ontario.

2) Visit Canada's Largest Oktoberfest In Kitchener-Waterloo

Kitchener-Waterloo's deep-rooted Bavarian history is well known across the country - Kitchener was actually called Berlin until 1916, after all. Their Oktoberfest is an annual nine-day festival in the twin cities of Kitchener–Waterloo. Based on the original German Oktoberfest, it is billed as Canada's Greatest Bavarian Festival and is the second-largest Oktoberfest in the world. It is held every October, this year running from October 5th - 13th. The event attracts roughly 700,000 visitors to the region every year and is one hell of a party. While its best-known draws are the beer-based celebrations, other cultural and entertainment attractions also fill the week. The most well-known is the parade held on Thanksgiving Day; as the only major parade on Canadian Thanksgiving. So, grab your lederhosen and come to experience a taste of Germany in Canada!

3) Head To A Farm

The agricultural industry in Southern Ontario is alive and well, as evidenced by the plethora of farms dotting the landscape. Why not make a day of it and experience the rural tranquillity yourself? With fall comes Halloween, and a trip to one of the many farms in Southern Ontario is a perfect excuse to choose your own pumpkin. If Halloween isn't your thing, apple picking is still offered at many farms during the beginning of fall. Support local, and make a day of it while you're at it!

4) Take In A Sporting Event

You can catch the tail end of the Toronto Blue Jays baseball season in early fall - same goes for the CFL and Major League Soccer. Fall signals the beginning of the NBA season (and this one will be one to watch for the Toronto Raptors). But, if you want to celebrate like a real Canadian, you know that Fall only means one thing: the NHL is back. Taking in a Toronto Maple Leafs game is a right of passage for Torontonians and Southern Ontarians alike - and this year is shaping up to be one of the most exciting in decades. So head on down to the newly re-named Scotiabank Arena and experience the thrill of live hockey for yourself.

5) Go Axe Throwing At The Backyard Axe Throwing League

It really doesn't get more Canadian than axe throwing. A visit to BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League, is a sure fire way to keep you and your friends entertained and leave a lasting impression. With 9 locations in Southern Ontario (including Toronto, Pickering, London, Kitchener, Hamilton, Ottawa, and Niagara Falls) it's never been easier to get involved with our sport.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League pioneered the sport of urban axe throwing back in 2006, so it's no surprise that we're the best at what we do. Our weekly league play is what made us famous, but each of our 14 locations across North America offer other ways to get involved with axe throwing. Our private event group bookings are offered for groups of 2 and up and are perfectly suited for any occasion - adult birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties, corporate team building, or just a summer outing with friends. Private event bookings include one on one coaching from our expert staff, followed by a round robin tournament and playoff. If you're looking to get involved in our sport with less commitment, BATL also offers weekly public walk-in sessions with no advance booking required; just show up and hone your skill! Most BATL venues in Southern Ontario offer a fully licensed bar and food menu, meaning all you have to worry about is throwing axes. Join A League At BATL

How It All Started At The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump.

It didn't take long before the Backyard Axe Throwing League had outgrown its very own backyard. As you can imagine, putting that many people in a small outdoor space together got very loud very fast, and noise complaints were coming to a frequent issue. Not to mention, word had spread throughout the city so fast that the waitlist to join a league was becoming never ending. In 2011, BATL moved its operations indoors and secured an industrial space in the west end of Toronto. We instantly had leagues running four nights a week, and soon after opened up to private group bookings (perfectly suited for bachelor and bachelorette parties, adult birthdays, corporate team building, or a night out with friends).

Fast forward to 2018, the Backyard Axe Throwing League now has 13 locations across North America offering up the urban axe throwing experience that we pioneered over 12 years ago.

The Establishment Of The National Axe Throwing Federation

The National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) was established in 2016 to service the sport of axe throwing globally, with a vision to create broad and standardized competition amongst players, while providing member support through a mandate to promote universal safety, sportsmanship and competitive protocol. All league play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation umbrella, the worlds foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). Currently sitting at over 4000 league members worldwide, being part of the NATF gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing.

The NATF also hosts yearly tournaments at BATL, most notably the Summer Skills Competition and the National Axe Throwing Championships (NATC) and All-Star Weekend. The next NATC takes place in February of 2019 and is a day-long tournament that will be in its 9th year. The top four members in each league from all NATF members qualify for the pre-tournament, which ends up as a top 128 double elimination tournament. On top of a cash prize, the winner also gets to take home the Wilson Cup - named after BATL founder Matt Wilson.

What To Expect

Our axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. Our leagues are suitable for people of all skill levels, with staff on hand at all times ready to give you tips and tricks to make sure that you're hitting the bullseye. With 13 locations across North America (including Toronto, Pickering, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, and Calgary in Canada; and Chicago, Novi, and Nashville in the United States) it's never been easier to get involved in our sport.

NATF Summer Skillz 2018 Wrap Up

NATF Summer Skillz 2018 in Toronto Hosted by BATL

This past weekend, The Backyard Axe Throwing League's Toronto West location played host to the 2018 Summer Skillz Competition. This annual competition, in its 7th year, is a celebration of all things axe throwing. NATF league members from all across North America gathered to participate in four specialized axe throwing games - Blackjack, Around the World, Doubles, and Yahtzee. Each game varies from the format of our league play and requires skill and precision to succeed at, which is why this annual competition brings out the best of the best. Congratulations to all champions from Summer Skillz in Toronto 2018, and thanks to everyone that came out and competed!

Following the events, everyone put down the axes and spent some quality time with their fellow throwers. Like most BATL venues, BATL Toronto West sports a full bar which kept the party going. In addition to a DJ providing tunes to keep the dance floor moving, our Summer Skills after party also featured an outdoor patio sponsored by Beaus All Natural Brewing Co. that included a dunk tank and high striker game. BATL prides itself on the community that we build through the urban sport of axe throwing, and that was on full display this Sunday.

The next Skillz competition will take place this weekend in Baltimore hosted by NATF member Urban Axes, with the Summer Skillz Superslam and Urban Open, which is a double elimination tournament. The next Skillz competition at BATL will be in February of 2019, which is in conjunction with the National Axe Throwing Championships (NATC) in Toronto. Winter Skillz is part of our annual All-Star Weekend and will take place after the NATC - a day-long tournament that will be in its 9th year. The top four members in each league from all NATF qualify for the pre-tournament, which ends up as a top 128 double elimination tournament. On top of a cash prize, the winner will also get to take home the Wilson Cup - named after BATL founder Matt Wilson.

The National Axe Throwing Federation League Community

If you've been trying to figure out what to do with your spare time and the idea of making new friendships and becoming part of a like-minded worldwide community, consider joining an axe throwing league. The Backyard Axe Throwing League started 12 years as just that: a group of friends throwing axes for friendly competition in a backyard once a week. What started as a group of 8 friends quickly snowballed to a core of over 60 people - getting popular to the point that in 2011 we had to take our operations to an indoor warehouse. Since then, the scoring system has been refined and the National Axe Throwing Federation was formed (of which BATL is a founding member). Since pioneering the sport of axe throwing, there are now more than 4000 league members across the world playing under rules founded by BATL - the pioneers of urban axe throwing.

Join Our Community

Our axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. With 13 locations across North America (including Toronto, Pickering, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, and Calgary in Canada; and Chicago, Novi, and Nashville in the United States) it's never been easier to get involved in our sport. Learn more about our axe throwing leagues here.

League play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation umbrella, the worlds foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). The NATF was established in 2016 to service the sport of axe throwing globally, with a vision to create broad and standardized competition amongst players, while providing member support through a mandate to promote universal safety, sportsmanship and competitive protocol. Being part of the NATF gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing.

Axe Throwing at BATL

Though our weekly league play is what made us famous, each of our 13 locations across North America offers other ways to get involved with axe throwing. Most BATL locations offer a fully licensed bar and food menu, meaning all you have to do is worry about aiming for the bullseye and leave the rest to us.

Celebrity Visits At The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Rick Fox BATL

We’re BATL, the original Backyard Axe Throwing League. Our mission is to show people the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots. We’re immensely proud to have been the first organization in the world to offer an urban venue to experience the thrill of indoor axe throwing in leagues, walk-ins, group parties and team building.

About The Backyard Axe Throwing League

The Backyard Axe Throwing League pioneered the sport of urban axe throwing in a Toronto backyard in 2007 - 11 years ago. Since then we've grown 13 BATL venues across North America. Word spread like wildfire about the fun and satisfaction experienced when throwing an axe into our targets, and BATL has a strong reputation as the original and best home of axe throwing. We've hosted thousands of guests over the years, resulting in millions of axes thrown within our venue. As such, it's no surprise that BATL has played host to countless celebrity visits over the past years. The list is as varied as it gets, playing host to athletes, TV stars, movie stars, musicians, tastemakers, bloggers, writers - the list goes on. Celebrities have visited both for filming (using our creatively designed industrial spaces as an epic backdrop) and to unwind by taking part in our private group bookings.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League in the Community

NATC Red Door Family Shelter

At The Backyard Axe Throwing League, we're always looking for new ways to make a positive impact on the communities surrounding our venues. Since 2006 we’ve hosted dozens of fundraising events and donated our services to a number of local charities and non-profit organizations such as schools, hospitals and other special causes. With 13 locations in North America (including Toronto, Niagara Falls, London, Kitchener, Pickering, Ottawa, Calgary, Nashville, Chicago, and Detroit (Novi)) we have a unique opportunity to make a real difference in all the communities that we are part of, and we're always searching for more ways to spread the love. The Backyard Axe Throwing League prides itself in being a strong social hub and positive corporate citizen in all communities in which we operate. Each location works directly with local charities on a monthly basis to support axe throwing fundraising activities.

Ongoing Support for the Red Door Family Shelter

Back in February of 2017, the Backyard Axe Throwing League took part in and hosted the inaugural National Axe Throwing Championship (NATC) put on by the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF). Ahead of the NATC Finals, the NATF had sanctioned axe throwing venues from across North America compete in a day-long competition, with all proceeds going to The Red Door Family Shelter. After all, was said and done we raised over $4000 for the cause – which was truly amazing, but we knew we could do better. For the second and final instalment of the NATC (again with all proceeds going to the Red Door Family Shelter), we managed to raise nearly $10,000. As usual, we're excited to try and beat that again next year.

The Red Door Family Shelter is a non-profit that features a dedicated and caring staff team addresses the particular needs of families in crisis. The services provided reduce the impact of homelessness by providing safe and supportive shelter to hundreds of families each year. It helps keep families together by providing services for the whole family, and assists each family in establishing a stable life beyond the shelter.

Local Support in the Kitchener-Waterloo Region

Going 3 years strong, last month BATL Kitchener hosted their annual instalment of Axe The Stigma. Axe The Stigma raises money in support of Lutherwood Child & Family Foundation and The Coping Centre - which offers mental health support. We have also hosted events for Make A Wish Canada, Canadian Cancer Society, and many more.

The United Way & BATL Ottawa

Back in 2017, Backyard Axe Throwing League’s Ottawa location hosted a charity tournament in support of those who lost their homes (and more) in a string of fires in the Vanier area of the Capital Region. We helped raise thousands of dollars for people in the Vanier community. BATL Ottawa has also played host to fundraisers for The United Way - raising money for mental health awareness, Youth Ottawa, and many more.

More Local Support Across North America

We get asked a lot about what we do with our used axe throwing target boards, and we’re always looking for ways to put them to good use. Want an example? Back in 2015, BATL Pickering started donating its target used boards from leagues and private events to Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary to help keep monkeys warm in the winter. SBFPS is currently home to 20 monkeys who come for peace and solace from a variety of backgrounds, some of them with stories difficult even to share, let alone survive. While it is one of the more unique charities we have supported, it's just the tip of the iceberg as far as charitable events out of BATL Pickering. We've also run tournaments for The Salvation Army, minor league hockey and baseball teams, and MS Canada (just to name a few).

It’s been 3 years since the Backyard Axe Throwing League first opened in Calgary – at the time, our first venue located outside of Ontario. We thought the mountain lifestyle seemed like an obvious fit for axe throwing, and we were right! Over the past 2 years, BATL Calgary has hosted people from all over Western Canada and taught them the ways of our sport, and it’s been a complete success. On top of that, BATL Calgary is constantly engaging with our community, partnering up with local charities, sports teams, and everything in between. BATL has played host to events in support of the Calgary Hitmen Community Caring Program, Calgary Public Library, Calgary Girls Choir, and many more.
