Fun Things To Do Around University of Waterloo/Laurier

BATL Kitchener

Known as the City of Berlin until 1916, Kitchener Ontario has long been a thriving hub in South Western Ontario. With a population of over 240,000, Kitchener is a big-city full of excitement, while still holding on to its small-town charm. The city’s deep Germanic roots and history are most evident during the annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, the largest celebration of all things Bavarian outside of Germany. But it isn't just been that keeps Kitchener thriving - it's also known as Silicon Valley North. Which only makes sense that it is also home to two prestigious Canadian universities.

Wilfrid Laurier University (commonly referred to as WLU or Laurier) is one of the 2 public universities in Waterloo. Laurier has a second campus in Brantford and offices in Kitchener, Toronto and Chongqing, China. Named in honour of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the seventh Prime Minister of Canada, the university offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of fields. With over 15,000 students, Laurier is a bustling hub within the Tri-City area.

The University of Waterloo (commonly referred to as Waterloo, UW, or UWaterloo) is the other main public research university in Waterloo. The main campus is adjacent to Uptown Waterloo and Waterloo Park in downtown Waterloo. The University of Waterloo has 40,000 full and part-time students cumulatively between undergraduate and graduate programs - making it one of the largest universities in Canada.

With university classes winding down, you might ask yourself how to best spend your time in and around the Kitchener Waterloo area this summer. Not to worry, BATL has you covered.

The History of Axe Throwing at BATL

Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Little did they know that this innocent way to pass the time would soon evolve into the creation of a worldwide sport.

Upon returning home to Toronto, BATL founder and CEO Matt Wilson decided to set up a target in his backyard and invite some friends over to show them just how cathartic throwing a sharp axe into wood could be. A point system was created, and soon enough a group of 8 friends would meet every week and engage in some friendly competition. 8 friends quickly grew to 16, and 16 quickly grew to 32. Before he knew it, Matt was hosting 2 full leagues of a total of 60+ per night in his backyard, not including all the spectators that would stop by to catch a glimpse of our exciting new sport.

Fast forward to 2015 when the Backyard Axe Throwing League joined forces with newly opened axe throwing venue Tomahawks to become BATL London – bringing our style of urban axe throwing to the masses of Kitchner, Ontario and the surrounding area – and we haven’t looked back since! Over the past 4 years, BATL Kitchener has hosted people from all over South Western Ontario and taught them the ways of our sport, and it’s been a complete success. On top of that, BATL Kitchener is constantly engaging with our community, partnering up with local charities, local sports teams, and more.

Calgary sits in the foothills of Canada’s Rocky Mountains, where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet. It is the major urban centre for the entire southern half of the province of Alberta and is surrounded by an area of profound beauty with an unspoiled, resource-rich natural environment. Calgary has been ranked the 5th most liveable city in the world by The Economist Intelligence Unit from 2009-2017. In 2018, Calgary rose to become the 4th most liveable city in the world.

Almost 4 years ago the Backyard Axe Throwing League Calgary opened up shop in the North East and has been bringing the urban sport of axe throwing to not just Airdrie, Chestermere, Calgary, and the surrounding area but with guests coming from all over Alberta and Western Canada. Located near Sunridge Mall at Deerfoot Trail and 16th Ave. NE, BATL Calgary offers the best indoor axe throwing experience – pioneered by us at the Backyard Axe Throwing League back in 2006.

Fast forward to 2016 when BATL brought our unique sport to the people of Calgary and the surrounding area, and we haven’t looked back since! Over the past 3 years, BATL Calgary has hosted people from all over Western Canada and taught them the ways of our sport, and it’s been a complete success. On top of that, BATL Calgary is constantly engaging with our community, partnering up with local charities, local sports teams, and more.

If you have yet to experience the unique thrill of our sport, what are you waiting for? BATL Calgary offers many ways to get involved with our unique brand of urban axe throwing. Outside of the Calgary area? Not to worry, BATL boats 15 venues across North America, including Toronto, Kitchener, Pickering, Niagara Falls, Hamilton, Ottawa, and Calgary in Canada and Novi, Chicago, Houston, Scottsdale, and Nashville in the United States – with more on the way this year. Wondering how to get involved? BATL Calgary offers multiple ways to get involved with axe throwing.

Private Group Bookings at The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Our private group bookings are perfectly suited for any adult get-togethers – birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties, corporate team building, and much much more. Our private events last 2-2.5 hours and are run in the safe and comfortable environment that BATL has become famous for by our expertly trained staff, who also happen to be the best axe throwers in the planet. They will run you and your guests through training to ensure that you’re all sticking bullseyes before launching you into a round robin tournament, followed by a playoff (in order to crown a champion, of course). A little friendly competition can go a long way, so gather your friends and come experience it for yourself! BATL Calgary also features a fully equipped bar and kitchen - meaning you and your guests can stay nourished while throwing.

Walk-in Axe Throwing

If you’re looking for a more casual way to get involved, all 15 BATL venues across North America (including BATL Calgary) offer walk-in axe throwing each and every weekend. The Backyard Axe Throwing League offers axe throwing on a walk-in basis at designated times each week. Our coaches will be on hand to instruct those who have never thrown an axe before, and offer tips on technique for more experienced throwers looking to sharpen their skills. Similar to public skating, skiing or swimming – guests throw in a common area with other participants, and may need to make allowance for shared space based on friendly guidance from your BATL coach.

Weekly Axe Throwing League Play

Our axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our staff – all resident axe pros. Each season consists of round-robin style tournament play, where you’ll throw 28 games against other people in the league, culminating in a top 16 double elimination playoff on week 8. Our leagues are suitable for people of all skill levels, with staff on hand at all times ready to give you tips and tricks to make sure that you’re hitting the bullseye. Joining an axe throwing league is a great excuse to get out of the house and engage in some weekly friendly competition. But more than that, it’s a chance to meet new friends and be part of an extremely tight-knit community. At BATL, our mission is to show people the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots.

No matter how you choose to get involved, stop by BATL Calgary and see for yourself what all the fuss is about!

Axe Throwing at BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

It's nearly summer in Calgary when Alberta transforms the entire area into one of the most beautiful backdrops in all of Canada. The city of Calgary sits in the sunny eastern foothills of Canada’s Rocky Mountains, where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet. It is the major urban centre for the entire southern half of the province of Alberta and is surrounded by an area of profound beauty with an unspoiled, resource-rich natural environment. The rapid growth of Calgary is largely thanks to its status as the centre of Canada's oil industry, but the city is much more than that. It's a dining destination, an arts hot spot, a nature-lovers dream, and as evidenced in its nickname, Cowtown, is steeped in Western culture (thanks in large to the Calgary Stampede - a massive rodeo that takes place in July). No matter what brings you to Cowtown this summer, there's sure to be something for everyone.

Almost 4 years ago Backyard Axe Throwing League Calgary opened up shop in the North East and has been bringing the urban sport of axe throwing to not just Airdrie, Chestermere, Calgary, and the surrounding area but with guests coming from all over Alberta and Western Canada. If you're looking for a cool way to spend a few hours, this is it. Many companies just off the Bow River such as Lazy Day Raft Rentals offer affordable rentals with all the necessary equipment provided.

Party Planning In Toronto

BATL The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Almost 13 years ago the Backyard Axe Throwing League was formed in a downtown Toronto backyard. Fast forward to 2019, BATL has 2 venues in Toronto with a 3rd location opening later this month. BATL Toronto East is situated in the Portlands area of Toronto at the foot of the Don Valley Parkway and is easily accessible from downtown Toronto and QEW/Gardiner Expressway, BATL Yorkdale is situated next to Yorkdale Mall and directly off the 401 highway.

Mark Meszoros of the News-Herald magazine recently took a trip to BATL Toronto and summed up the experience perfectly. "I was pumped to revisit BATL — Backyard Axe Throwing League — and my skills at hurling the handled weapon into targets has come a long way since I set foot in the place the first time. At the risk of bragging, I served as a pseudo instructor to some of the other writers. It’s worth mentioning you now can order a drink at BATL, which was not the case in 2017."

Since our inception in 2006, The Backyard Axe Throwing League has played host to hundreds of bachelor parties, each one guaranteed to leave a lasting impression on all guests. With 14 locations across North America including one of our newest locations in Nashville, which is a very popular city to host bachelor and bachelorette parties!
