Staff Sunday Remembers Matt Harper

by Brian Simmons 0 comments

General Yorkdale

Just over a week ago, the BATL family lost an important and respected member.  Matt Harper was a staff member BATL Yorkdale, but more than that he was a much-loved axe throwing league member, friend, and human being in general.  He was known for his smile, selflessness, and constant willingness to help and encourage all those around him.  He was passionate about music, and if you knew him, you'd know his tastes reached all genres - and he could curate one hell of a playlist.

Harper was also good with his hands … he was an avid builder, as evidenced by the throne he is sitting on in this photo.  BATL Yorkdale is home to this Matt Harper original.  We wish the best to his family and loved ones.  He'll be part of the Backyard Axe Throwing League’s family for eternity.  We'll miss you every day, bud.  Rest In Power.  #batlstaffsunday

BATL The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Staff Sunday with Cheryl from Yorkdale

General Yorkdale

Meet Cheryl, one of the original staff at the Backyard Axe Throwing League’s Yorkdale location (and will shortly be transferring to our Pickering location).  While it may not seem like it from her bubbly personality, she's a serious axe thrower averaging 60+ scores over her past couple seasons.

When she's not working or axe throwing in two leagues you'll find her soaking up the sun at her cottage with a cold bevy, going on *serious* camping trips, or trying to steal your dog for cuddles when you're not looking.  If you've ever placed a call to BATL’s call centre, you may have had the pleasure of dealing with her - as she is also one of our customer service representatives.  She's always living life to the fullest with the most positive vibrant attitude making friends everywhere she goes.  Glad she's part of the BATL family. #batlstaffsunday

Staff Sunday With Saul from Yorkdale

General Yorkdale

Meet Saul, who works at our #BATL Yorkdale location. This recipient of the David Bowie Award of Excellence started throwing axes competitively when Yorkdale opened its doors a little over two years ago. Fast forward to the present day and it's a pretty safe bet that if you stop by our Yorkdale location near Yorkdale Mall in Toronto that you'll see him.

Whether running his league (which he loves to death) at 153 Bridgeland Avenue, throwing axe himself in a league night, or just dropping in and trying to improve his throw, Saul's always around. Ask him why and he will give you a pretty detailed explanation about how he's so honoured, proud and lucky to be a part of the community. If you ask us at the Backyard Axe Throwing League, we'd say we are the lucky ones.

In the off chance he's not at Yorkdale, you can find him watching a good movie, or directing and producing one of his own projects. Most of the time he's at BATL because he just wants to "be good". We think you're pretty great bud!  #batlstaffsunday

Staff Sunday Featuring Bobbitt

by Brian Simmons 0 comments

General Yorkdale

Meet Christopher Edward Bobbitt, or just Bobbitt as most of us refer to him as. Bobbitt is a long time employee at the Backyard Axe Throwing League - working out of BATL Toronto before moving over to help start up BATL Yorkdale when it opened just over two years ago. A longtime member of our axe throwing community, Bobbitt is cherished amongst his fellow employees and axe throwers.

Today is Bobbitt's last day with BATL, as he is moving on to pursue a new career, and we want to thank him for everything he's brought to the table over the last 7 years. We'll miss his food (Bobbitt was the chef de cuisine for one of our first Skills competitions ever), his wit, his banter, and all the sweet ass martial arts he does. We wish you luck in all your future endeavours. We love you, Bobbitt! #batlstaffsunday

Yorkdale’s 2 Year Axe Throwing Anniversary

by Brian Simmons 0 comments

General Yorkdale

A massive shout out to the Backyard Axe Throwing League’s Yorkdale staff.  Much like Cadbury cream eggs, despite their hard appearance they are filled with gooey centres of positivity and excellence. You can find them coaching everyone how to throw an axe - from Hockey Wives to MPs and constantly espousing the BATL belief of being good to each other.

We're wishing a happy birthday to our Yorkdale location; for 2 years it's been offering the North Toronto community a place to blow of some steam and throw some axes with this obviously suave and sophisticated team of axe-ninjas and we're looking forward to many more.  HBD, BATL Yorkdale!

BATL Staff Sunday With Alexis

General Yorkdale

Meet Alexis Fabricius - most commonly referred to around these parts as Fab. Fab works at the Backyard Axe Throwing League’s Yorkdale location, and is one of the original members of our Sterling Monday league. It didn't take her long to hone her craft when she joined her first axe throwing league back in 2012, which shouldn't really come as a surprise. Her skill set is vast, to say the least.

When not throwing axes you might find Fab running her side business Invicta Self-Defense, a school specializing in self-defense classes for women. She speaks four languages (German, French, English, and Latin) and has a degree in medieval studies, which makes her a great conversation starter. She's also a huge Seinfeld fan, which really says a lot about a person. We're thrilled to have her as a part of our family, and if you've ever crossed paths with her you'd surely know why. We love you, Fab #batlstaffsunday

Axe Throwing Anniversary at Yorkdale

by BATL 0 comments

General Yorkdale

The Backyard Axe Throwing League recently celebrated its first anniversary of bringing axe throwing to North York, on February 7th.  Over the past year thousands of people have experienced the thrill of axe throwing for the first time at BATL Yorkdale as part of adult birthday parties, bachelor parties, bachelorette parties and company team building.

As for our many league members, axe throwing at BATL has quickly become a weekly tradition with new friendship, stories and legends being created with each passing season.

We'd like to say a very sincere thank you to everyone, especially our skilled and dedicated staff, for making the Yorkdale venue of the Backyard Axe Throwing League such a huge success over the past year.  We can't wait to see what 2016 has in store!

Axe Throwing at BATL is Accessible for Everyone

General Yorkdale

We recently hosted Irena at our Yorkdale location to throw some axes in a private party with her friends.  With her positive attitude combined with our skilled coaching, we had her sticking axes in no time.

At The Backyard Axe Throwing League we’ve have taught a diverse range of people how to throw axes, ranging fron the visually imparied, to elderly and those with mobility contraints.

We pride ourselves on being accessible to nearly anyone for both leagues and private axe throwing events - such as birthday and Christmas parties, and our dedicated coaches know just what it takes to get the job done.  Thanks for coming by, Irena!
