BATL at the Ford City Retro Camp

by Diane Stolte 0 comments

General London

The Backyard Axe Throwing League attended the inaugural Ford City Retro Camp this past weekend in Windsor, Ontario to provide the thrill of axe throwing. The festival (in its first year) was modeled after summer camps you may remember from your youth, but this time it was also geared towards adults. Will Gordon of our BATL London location summed the event up best in an article from The Windsor Star: “When you throw an axe, you really can’t think about anything else...It’s like the ultimate stress reliever. Plus, it makes an amazing sound. We say it’s all about the sound.”

If you couldn't make it out to the Ford City Retro Camp, don't fret. BATL has locations across North America, with one opening soon in Detroit, which is just minutes from the Windsor border. Each BATL location offers many ways to get involved with axe throwing - from our world famous weekly leagues and public walk-in sessions, to private bookings for groups of 6 and up (perfectly suited for adult birthdays, corporate team building functions, and bachelor/bachelorette parties).

"Have you ever walked into a place and been instantly awed, followed by the thought “This place is fucking awesome”? Well, if you haven’t, then my friends do I ever have a place you need to visit. BATL London..."  Those are the first words echoed by Kendra Allen regarding her recent trip to BATL London in her web blog, Adventures in Axe Throwing.

But don't just take her word for it, find out for yourself.  The Backyard Axe Throwing League’s London venue is located centrally in the city at 38 Adelaide Street North. We boast 4 axe throwing arenas, capable of hosting 100 throwers at any given time.

Opening soon will be our lounge which features standing and seating areas, foosball, pinball, and a stage for live entertainment.  In addition to our famous weekly axe throwing leagues (how BATL got started 10 years ago) BATL London also offers walk in axe throwing, and private events for groups of 6 and more people - perfect for adule birthday parties, bachelor / bachelorette parties, team building outings, and everything in between.  Find out more about BATL London here.

General London

This week, The London Free Press and JA London got together to host a charity event at the Backyard Axe Throwing League; bringing out people to throw axes for a good cause in the local community.  JA Canada works by helping prepare youth to succeed by providing opportunities to learn financial literacy, entrepreneurship and work readiness skills with engaging programs and the help of dedicated volunteers in London Ontario.

BATL has played host to numerous axe throwing charity events over the years across all of our locations.  Take a look at some of the events BATL has hosted, and consider one of our venues when planning your next charity event!

Staff Sunday With Zach from London

Meet Zach Matthews. Zach, aka "Tight Pants" is an axe priest out at BATL London. Before moving in search of the bright lights of London, Zach called the rough and frigid streets of Timmins, Ontario his stomping grounds. He joined the BATL family after he realized that his quest to be Hugh Jackman's stunt double wasn't going to pan out.  Needless to say, the Backyard Axe Throwing League quickly became his second home.

Fun facts about Zach: he goes nuts over pumpkin spiced lattes (they didn't have them in Timmins), he's been bitten 3 times (!) by howler monkeys, and he's never worn a pair of loose fitting pants. When he's not simultaneously teaching people how to throw axes and leaving them awestruck with his good looks, you can find him playing video games. That's it. That's the only other place you can find him. On Tuesdays, Zach throws with the giants of our London Tuesday Red axe throwing league. Some say he doesn't do so well because he goes for clutch on all 15 throws of a match, but we're not sure. Oh, and he's deathly allergic to peanuts. Glad to have you as a part of the family, tight pants!  #batlstaffsunday

Staff Sunday With Will from London

Meet Will, who works at our London Ontario location.  Will first got into axe throwing after coming to a fundraiser at the original Tomahawks location in London, before we joined forces.  He was instantly hooked, joining the original Tuesday night axe throwing league - and he hasn't missed a season since.  A multiple time champion, you can even find him making the commute to BATL Kitchener to throw in Sunday league.

When he's not throwing axes, Will cuts his teeth as a municipal designer.  He's also a father of three, and a grandfather of one.  A man of intrigue, Will also happens to have been on the first ever Canadian reality TV show (his team didn't win, but he still had a blast).

The Backyard Axe Throwing LEague has also become a family affair for Will.  His dad Jeff also throws at BATL London and his sister, nieces, two sons, daughter and extended family members have all been axe throwing or are league members.  We're glad that you're a part of our BATL family, Will! 😘 #batlstaffsunday
