Celebrity Visits At The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Rick Fox BATL

We’re BATL, the original Backyard Axe Throwing League. Our mission is to show people the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots. We’re immensely proud to have been the first organization in the world to offer an urban venue to experience the thrill of indoor axe throwing in leagues, walk-ins, group parties and team building.

About The Backyard Axe Throwing League

The Backyard Axe Throwing League pioneered the sport of urban axe throwing in a Toronto backyard in 2007 - 11 years ago. Since then we've grown 13 BATL venues across North America. Word spread like wildfire about the fun and satisfaction experienced when throwing an axe into our targets, and BATL has a strong reputation as the original and best home of axe throwing. We've hosted thousands of guests over the years, resulting in millions of axes thrown within our venue. As such, it's no surprise that BATL has played host to countless celebrity visits over the past years. The list is as varied as it gets, playing host to athletes, TV stars, movie stars, musicians, tastemakers, bloggers, writers - the list goes on. Celebrities have visited both for filming (using our creatively designed industrial spaces as an epic backdrop) and to unwind by taking part in our private group bookings.

BATL's Celebrity Axe Throwing Events

Just a few highlights of our celebrity visits over the past 11 years include:

  • Vin Diesel and Ruby Rose visiting for a birthday party.
  • Rick Fox filming a segment for NBA TV.
  • Swedish metal band Amon Amarth.
  • Gerard Butler celebrating his birthday.
  • Kate Beirness of TSN attending a charity event.
  • The cast of Shadowhunters axe throwing for their filming wrap celebration.

Situated just 8 miles from the City of Detroit, the community of Novi has been one of the fastest growing cities in the state of Michigan for years. Located in the Oakland County area, Novi is serviced by 3 main highways - making places like Flint, Lansing, Monroe, Jackson, and Grand Rapids easily accessible. More than just Motown and college sports, the state of Michigan borders 4 of the great lakes, is home to more than 11,000 inland lakes and offers a little something for everyone that pays a visit.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League in Metro Detroit

The Backyard Axe Throwing League Novi opened earlier this month and is the premier axe throwing facility in metro Detroit. The venue is located at Twelve Mile Crossing at Fountain Walk near West Oaks Shopping Centre and is capable of hosting parties ranging from 2 – 100 + people. The Backyard Axe Throwing League Novi is our 13th location in North America (serving Metro Detroit, Flint, Lansing, Monroe, Jackson, Ann Arbor and will boast everything that the Backyard Axe Throwing League has become famous for - the best urban axe throwing in the world. This includes private event bookings for groups of 2 and up (perfectly suited for bachelor/bachelorette parties, adult birthdays, corporate team building events, and much more), in addition to our weekly public walk-in sessions.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League was founded in 2006 in a Toronto backyard, making us the first to pioneer the sport of urban axe throwing. Since then, we have expanded to 13 locations in North America including Toronto, London, Niagara, Calgary, Ottawa, and many more (with even more on the way) - bringing axe throwing to countless guests. Last year, BATL started its expansion into the USA with locations in Nashville and Chicago, followed by our newest venue in Novi, Michigan. With US locations in Madison, Wisconsin; Houston, Texas; Albuquerque, New Mexico; and Scottsdale, Arizona set to open this year - we're just getting started!

If you're looking for a reason to get involved with the best axe throwing experience in the world, Backyard Axe Throwing League Novi has you covered.

Corporate Parties

Summer employee parties often take a back seat to their more popular cousin, the winter holiday party. Sure, winter holiday parties are full of good tidings and cheer, but that doesn’t mean you should overlook the importance of a summer party. BATL is the perfect venue to host your next staff outing. Our private events last 2-2.5 hours and are run in the safe and comfortable environment that BATL has become famous for by our expertly trained staff, who also happen to be the best axe throwers in the planet. They will run you and your guests through training to ensure that you're all sticking bullseyes before launching you into a round robin tournament, followed by a playoff (in order to crown a champion, of course). A little friendly competition is a key to a team building outing so if you're looking for the perfect event for your next corporate party in Novi, look no further than BATL.

Bachelor/Bachelorette Parties

Do you need ideas for planning a bachelor party that all the guys will enjoy? If bowling, paintball, or escape rooms have already been done, or if you’re looking for an exciting activity for the entire group – no matter what their age, skill or fitness level, then think about axe throwing. If you’re the bachelor party organizer, BATL is here to make your life easy. Most BATL locations offer full bar service and food menus, meaning all you and your guests have to do is show up and leave the rest to us. Constantly ranking at the top of "Bachelor/Bachelorette Party Destination" lists on web blogs and magazines, a trip to BATL will ensure a day to remember for the bride or groom to be.

Join An Axe Throwing League

If one day of axe throwing doesn't sound like enough to satisfy you - don't worry. You're not alone. When we started back in 2006, the Backyard Axe Throwing League was just that - a league of friends that got together every week in a downtown Toronto backyard to compete and hone their skill. League play will be starting soon in Novi and is the perfect excuse to get out of your house once a week and meet some new friends, all while engaging in some friendly competition.

Our axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. Each season consists of round-robin style tournament play, where you'll throw 28 games against other people in the league, culminating in a top 16 double elimination playoff on week 8. Our leagues are suitable for people of all skill levels, with staff on hand at all times ready to give you tips and tricks to make sure that you're hitting the bullseye. League play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation umbrella, the worlds foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). Being part of the NATF also gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing. Be awesome. Join a league.

BATL Novi offers a little something for everyone, and we can't wait to continue meeting our neighbours and building on the amazing community we've already met. Novi, it's time to Join the BATL!

The Backyard Axe Throwing League in the Community

NATC Red Door Family Shelter

At The Backyard Axe Throwing League, we're always looking for new ways to make a positive impact on the communities surrounding our venues. Since 2006 we’ve hosted dozens of fundraising events and donated our services to a number of local charities and non-profit organizations such as schools, hospitals and other special causes. With 13 locations in North America (including Toronto, Niagara Falls, London, Kitchener, Pickering, Ottawa, Calgary, Nashville, Chicago, and Detroit (Novi)) we have a unique opportunity to make a real difference in all the communities that we are part of, and we're always searching for more ways to spread the love. The Backyard Axe Throwing League prides itself in being a strong social hub and positive corporate citizen in all communities in which we operate. Each location works directly with local charities on a monthly basis to support axe throwing fundraising activities.

Ongoing Support for the Red Door Family Shelter

Back in February of 2017, the Backyard Axe Throwing League took part in and hosted the inaugural National Axe Throwing Championship (NATC) put on by the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF). Ahead of the NATC Finals, the NATF had sanctioned axe throwing venues from across North America compete in a day-long competition, with all proceeds going to The Red Door Family Shelter. After all, was said and done we raised over $4000 for the cause – which was truly amazing, but we knew we could do better. For the second and final instalment of the NATC (again with all proceeds going to the Red Door Family Shelter), we managed to raise nearly $10,000. As usual, we're excited to try and beat that again next year.

The Red Door Family Shelter is a non-profit that features a dedicated and caring staff team addresses the particular needs of families in crisis. The services provided reduce the impact of homelessness by providing safe and supportive shelter to hundreds of families each year. It helps keep families together by providing services for the whole family, and assists each family in establishing a stable life beyond the shelter.

Local Support in the Kitchener-Waterloo Region

Going 3 years strong, last month BATL Kitchener hosted their annual instalment of Axe The Stigma. Axe The Stigma raises money in support of Lutherwood Child & Family Foundation and The Coping Centre - which offers mental health support. We have also hosted events for Make A Wish Canada, Canadian Cancer Society, and many more.

The United Way & BATL Ottawa

Back in 2017, Backyard Axe Throwing League’s Ottawa location hosted a charity tournament in support of those who lost their homes (and more) in a string of fires in the Vanier area of the Capital Region. We helped raise thousands of dollars for people in the Vanier community. BATL Ottawa has also played host to fundraisers for The United Way - raising money for mental health awareness, Youth Ottawa, and many more.

More Local Support Across North America

We get asked a lot about what we do with our used axe throwing target boards, and we’re always looking for ways to put them to good use. Want an example? Back in 2015, BATL Pickering started donating its target used boards from leagues and private events to Story Book Farm Primate Sanctuary to help keep monkeys warm in the winter. SBFPS is currently home to 20 monkeys who come for peace and solace from a variety of backgrounds, some of them with stories difficult even to share, let alone survive. While it is one of the more unique charities we have supported, it's just the tip of the iceberg as far as charitable events out of BATL Pickering. We've also run tournaments for The Salvation Army, minor league hockey and baseball teams, and MS Canada (just to name a few).

It’s been 3 years since the Backyard Axe Throwing League first opened in Calgary – at the time, our first venue located outside of Ontario. We thought the mountain lifestyle seemed like an obvious fit for axe throwing, and we were right! Over the past 2 years, BATL Calgary has hosted people from all over Western Canada and taught them the ways of our sport, and it’s been a complete success. On top of that, BATL Calgary is constantly engaging with our community, partnering up with local charities, sports teams, and everything in between. BATL has played host to events in support of the Calgary Hitmen Community Caring Program, Calgary Public Library, Calgary Girls Choir, and many more.

Learn How BATL Can Support Your Cause

If you are looking for a unique experience for your charitable fundraiser, look no further. The Backyard Axe Throwing League is the perfect backdrop for you and your guests to raise money while competing in the friendly competition, all under the guidance of our expertly trained coaches in a safe environment. The Emergence of Axe Throwing in Chicago, Illinois

Plan a Trip to the Backyard Axe Throwing League in Chicago

batl expert axe throwing coaches

The Windy City

Situated in Illinois and on Lake Michigan, the bustling City of Chicago is among one of the top cities across North America for culture, trends and entertainment. The city is known for its vast culture and historic sports franchise including the Chicago Bears, Chicago White Socks, Chicago Cubs and the Chicago Blackhawks. The popularity of sports and exciting new trends in the city sparked the desire by the population for a new and exciting thing to do. Urban axe throwing at the Backyard Axe Throwing League Chicago became the perfect opportunity to offer the people of Chicago a new and thrilling activity to experience.

The History of Axe Throwing

The sport of axe throwing was established in 2006 in the Toronto backyard of Matt Wilson. What started as a personal passion sparked by a camping trip with friends soon spread through word-of-mouth in Toronto. Matt Wilson spent his career learning the ropes of the hospitality business in Toronto, which enabled the creation of the first-ever urban axe throwing venue in Toronto, The Backyard Axe Throwing League. Urban axe throwing is comprised of ‘arenas,’ which are similar to a cross between a batting cage and bowling alley, with private space for groups of any size, and a music selection.

BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

The Backyard Axe Throwing League’s mission is to show people the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by the background roots. Matt Wilson's BATL is the first organization in the world to offer an urban venue to experience the thrill of indoor axe throwing. Today over 1 million people have experienced the thrill of the sport across the globe. With the success of BATL in the Greater Toronto Area, expansion was possible into Detroit, Pickering, Hamilton, London, Calgary, Ottawa, Kitchener-Waterloo, Nashville, Niagara Falls and the windy city of Chicago. This has encouraged and excited celebrities and television show segments such as; Hockey Wives, Grand Opry’s Another Round, Ruby Rose, Gerard Butler, George Parros, Clive Standen and many more.

The National Axe Throwing Federation

Through the expansion and popularity of the sport within the Backyard Axe Throwing League and other companies opening axe throwing locations across the world, the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) was established in early 2016 to service the sport of axe throwing globally and facilitate inter-league competition amongst members. The rule system upon which the NATF dates back over 12 years, having grown organically to form the basis of league play for over 4,000 competitive axe throwers. The members of the NATF are eligible to participate in National Axe Throwing Federation sanctioned events, such as the National Axe Throwing Championship, and enjoy free use of digital scoring and league management software hosted on axescores.com, amongst other benefits. A member of the NATF was a new location in Chicago, Thunderbolt Axe Throwing.

Thunderbolt Axe Throwing

Founded by Scott Hollander, Thunderbolt Axe Throwing was the first-ever axe throwing venue in Chicago. Located in the Portage Park neighbourhood, near the surrounding neighbourhoods of Old Irving Park, Avondale, Dunning and Des Plaines. Hollander is an axe thrower himself and former lawyer who has a passion for showing people a good time, throwing fun events and teaching people how to throw axes. Thunderbolt Axe Throwing Chicago gained local press in Voyage Chicago, the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Tonight amongst other news outlets.

Scott Hollander expressed to Chicago Tonight that “I used to be a lawyer and I left my job and I was travelling with friends. I’d thrown axes before outdoors for fun while camping and stuff like that, but I never knew about a business like this… We were travelling to Montreal and saw a place like this – and I immediately thought of Chicago.”

Furthermore, Scott believes that "it’s just a unique way for Chicagoans to have some harmless fun... I catch people on their way out turning to each other, you know, ‘that was awesome’ and that’s all I’m going for, you know, just having people just have a really good time.” The success of Thunderbolt Axe Throwing Chicago led to the merge with BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League.

Expansion with the Backyard Axe Throwing League

In December 2017, Scott Hollander and Thunderbolt Axe Throwing Chicago joined the team at BATL. Offering the community free public open houses and the launch of weekly axe throwing league nights (offered Sunday - Wednesday). This caught the eye of NBC Nightly News with Lester Holt and his segment, which can be viewed here. The piece discusses the emerging trend of axe throwing and the expansion of BATL in Chicago.

A Visit to BATL Chicago

At BATL Chicago, we stand by the belief that throwing an epic party should be fun and simple. Private event packages include 1- 2.5 hours of throwing depending on your group size, flexible food options and private space to fit your party’s needs. Trophies and streetwear are available as add-ons for an even more personal touch. Things begin with practice and instruction (no experience necessary!) from BATL’s expert coaches before starting a round robin and group playoff tournament. Private events cost $35.49 – $42.86 + tax per person.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League offers axe throwing on a walk-in basis at designated times each week. Our coaches will be on hand to instruct those who have never thrown an axe before, and offer tips on technique for more experienced throwers looking to sharpen their skills. Similar to public skating, skiing or swimming – guests throw in a common area with other participants, and may need to make allowance for shared space based on friendly guidance from your BATL coach.

Our leagues are the perfect excuse to get together with friends, make a few new ones and enjoy a little competition. With no experience necessary you’ll compete individually while receiving tips from our friendly coaches – and plenty of time to hang out between throwing. Our calendar culminates in the National Axe Throwing Championship, with qualifying players competing against the best throwers globally for the Wilson Cup and $7500 in prize money.

News & Events at BATL Chicago

The Backyard Axe Throwing League is a proud member of the Chicagoland Chamber of Commerce. Be sure to introduce yourself to the General Manager, Scott Hollander at the next networking event through the chamber! Since 2006, BATL has hosted dozens of fundraising events and donated our services to a number of local charities and non profit organizations such as schools, hospitals and other special causes. At BATL Chicago we are always looking for opportunities to get involved with the community, and we are capable of hosting your next fundraiser event or if you’d like to request BATL to support an upcoming non-profitt fundraising event, please contact your BATL Chicago for eligibility requirements.  Please take a few minutes to learn more about these organizations and get involved at this link.

BATL Hamilton, The Newest Canadian Location

hamilton ontario

We at the Backyard Axe Throwing League opened BATL Hamilton, our newest location in Canada, back at the end of 2017. It's our 13th BATL venue - joining the likes of Toronto, Pickering, Ottawa, London, Kitchener, Niagara Falls, Calgary, Nashville, Novi (Detroit), and Chicago that offer the best axe throwing experience possible. Since opening our doors, The Backyard Axe Throwing League Hamilton has quickly grown into a community favourite and a top destination within the city for a night out with friends or colleagues.

The Hamilton Community

For a long time it's been stuck in the shadow of its big sister down the QEW (Toronto), but over the past decade the City of Hamilton, Ontario has grown into its own. A big influx began due to it being a more affordable option than living in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, the list goes on - but it's not just cheap rent that is bringing people to this once thriving industrial steel city. Situated on the beautiful Niagara Escarpment, Hamilton (also known as The Hammer) and the surrounding area provides countless conservation areas, waterfalls, and trails for the outdoor-minded; on top of its vibrant dining, nightlife, arts, and culture scene. If you live in the Hamilton area or plan to take a trip in the near future, a stop at BATL Hamilton is a must.

The History of The Backyard Axe Throwing League

The Backyard Axe Throwing League pioneered the sport of urban axe throwing back in 2006, so it's no surprise that we're the best at what we do. Weekly Axe Throwing Leagues in Hamilton

If you're looking for a more in-depth way of getting involved, consider joining an axe throwing league, taking place on weeknights throughout the year at our BATL Hamilton location. In a recent post on the Night Helper Blog website, Lisa gives you some insight as to why a weekly axe throwing league is the perfect year-round hobby. "...what’s neat about axe throwing, unlike a lot of other sports, is that it’s a perfect hobby for year-round entertainment and exercise. Not only is it fun to warm up at an axe throwing league facility in the dead of winter by working those arm muscles, but it’s also fun to get outdoors in the summer heat and throw axes."

BATL Hamilton at ConBravo! 2018

If you're looking for a more casual way to immerse yourself in the urban sport of axe throwing, check out the BATL booth at this years ConBravo!

Top Bachelor or Bachelorette Party Destination Ideas

BATL The Backyard Axe Throwing League

The nice weather is finally upon us, which means that wedding season is kicking into full gear. If you're planning a bachelor or bachelorette party this summer, the choices in this day and age are limitless. With new event destinations that are sure to leave a lasting impression on your guests popping up all the time, deciding what is right for your bachelor/bachelorette party can be difficult. We've put together a list of our top-rated destinations to ensure that your party will be the talk of the town including a trip to BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League.

1) Go axe throwing at the Backyard Axe Throwing League

It’s well known that the days of traditional bachelor/bachelorette parties are over, and people are looking for new and exciting ways to celebrate with their friends. A trip to the Backyard Axe Throwing League is the perfect unique setting to host your next bachelor/bachelorette party.

Since our inception in 2006, The Backyard Axe Throwing League has played host to hundreds of bachelor parties, each one guaranteed to leave a lasting impression on all guests. We pioneered the sport of urban axe throwing, so it comes as no surprise that we’re the best at what we do. With 13 locations across North America including one of our newest locations in Nashville, which is a very popular city to host bachelor and bachelorette parties! You can find the rest of our locations in Toronto, Pickering, Ottawa, Kitchener, London, Niagara Falls, Calgary, and Hamilton in Canada; and Chicago, and Novi/Detroit in the US) it’s never been easier to find a BATL near you.

Each venue can host groups of 2 and up, and your private booking with us lasts from 1-2.5 hours and includes one on one training with our resident axe gurus, followed by a round robin style tournament and single elimination playoff. Axe throwing is an inclusive sport, and it's easy to excel at any age, gender, or ability - which makes it suited for both bachelor and bachelorette gatherings. Most of our locations are fully licensed and offer a variety of food and alcohol, which means you can leave the planning to us and focus on having fun. Find a location near you, and make sure your bachelor or bachelorette party includes a stop at BATL!

2) Head to a live music festival

Live music producers have been pushing the boundaries of the “festival experience” with the explosion of live music events happening all over the world - especially in the summer. Many festivals have become weekend long events that include places to stay and a diverse range of food options and activities. By finding a music festival with a diverse line up, you can be sure to keep both guys and girls entertained. Spend a day or a whole weekend with your closest group enjoying music on the breeze, great food and drink, and sometimes even games and rides. If you plan to spend a weekend camping (or glamping) at a festival, call the festival ahead of time to reserve a spot just for your group as some permit reserved group camping. Don't miss some great live music at the Calgary Stampede near BATL Calgary and Riot Fest near BATL Chicago.

3) Have a backyard barbequeue

Why go out when you can stay home? The best thing about throwing an easy backyard party is that it's, well, easy. There typically isn't a whole lot of planning and coordinating involved, and it is way cheaper than planning a huge destination bachelor or bachelorette bash, so the wedding party doesn't have to worry about emptying their wallets for yet another wedding expense. Creating a theme, finding fun decorations, setting up outdoor games, and customizing an out-of-the-ordinary barbecue menu can give your celebration the playful, youthful party vibe for which bachelor/bachelorette parties are typically known. If you're in Toronto, don't miss Cherry St. BBQ located right beside our Backyard Axe Throwing League location in East Toronto!

4) Have fun on a pub crawl or winery tour

It's hard to so much as turn a corner these days without running into a micro brewery. In addition, craft distilleries and new wineries are popping up everywhere across North America. Whatever adult beverage your locale is known for--embrace it, crawl style. Visit local pubs, breweries, or distilleries, with plenty of carb and water breaks in between. If you will be driving rather than walking, a party bus is probably the safest and most convenient bet. At BATL, we support local breweries be sure to check out Beau's All Natural Brewing co. in Vanek Hill near BATL Ottawa and Woodhouse Brewing co. located in Toronto, Ontario!

5) Head to a carnival or festival

Nostalgia may just be one of the most important ingredients to a successful party. Especially if you have known each other a long time, being a kid again might be one of the best ways to celebrate this next step in your lives. Luckily, summer is also carnival season. Go to a local carnival or arcade. Ride the rides. Lose all of your money at silly games. Eat bags full of cotton candy and popcorn. Just don't forget to take plenty of pictures in that cramped little photo booth! Don't miss the Ex at the Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, right downtown and located near our Backyard Axe Throwing League locations in Toronto, or the Whitby Rib Fest where you can find BATL Pickering hosting outdoor axe throwing with the 360insights.

When put to the task of planning your next bachelor or bachelorette party, remember that times have changed and there are so many ways to celebrate. Use this list for inspiration when planning your outing to the Backyard Axe Throwing League or another venue, and ensure that your guests will be left with a lasting impression!

Top Things To Do In Calgary This Summer

Calgary Summer Top Activities Including Axe Throwing

Summer in Calgary, Alberta transforms the entire area into one of the most beautiful backdrops in all of Canada.  The city of Calgary sits in the sunny eastern foothills of Canada’s Rocky Mountains, where the Bow and Elbow rivers meet.  It is the major urban centre for the entire southern half of the province of Alberta and is surrounded by an area of profound beauty with an unspoiled, resource-rich natural environment.  The rapid growth of Calgary is largely thanks to its status as the centre of Canada's oil industry, but the city is much more than that.  It's a dining destination, an arts hot spot, a nature-lovers dream, and as evidenced in its nickname, Cowtown, is steeped in Western culture (thanks in large to the Calgary Stampede - a massive rodeo that takes place in July).  No matter what brings you to Cowtown this summer, there's sure to be something for everyone.  Here are just a few suggestions of what to do when you visit Calgary including a visit to the Backyard Axe Throwing League (BATL Calgary).

1) Go buck wild at the Calgary Stampede

The 106th-annual Calgary Stampede takes place across the entire city this year from July 6 – 15th, and you can already feel the town starting to buzz. Billed as “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth” for a reason, the Calgary Stampede is not just midways and rodeos – but a 10-day celebration of all things Alberta, including live performances by Blue Rodeo, Colter Wall, Whitehorse, Lindi Ortega and Mike Plume.

Festivities are stationed at Stampede Park in the heart of downtown, making it easily accessible for anyone. Highlights this year include the Calgary Stampede Parade, Stampede Breakfast, the Thrill Zone, the Indian Oasis, band competitions, and much more. A must see festival for all visitors to Calgary and the surrounding area (Airdrie, Chestermere, Banff, Black Diamond, Canmore, Cochrane, Irricana, Nanton, Okotoks, Strathmore, and Turner Valley) - a trip to the Calgary Stampede is essential when visiting.

2) Go axe throwing at BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Almost 3 years ago the Backyard Axe Throwing League Calgary opened up shop in the North East and has been bringing the urban sport of axe throwing to not just Airdrie, Chestermere, Calgary, and the surrounding area but with guests coming from all over Alberta and Western Canada. Located near Sunridge Mall at Deerfoot Trail and 16th Ave. NE, BATL Calgary offers the best indoor axe throwing experience – pioneered by us at the Backyard Axe Throwing League back in 2006.

You can visit BATL Calgary for our public walk-in axe throwing each weekend, or book your own private axe throwing event. We’re capable of hosting groups anywhere from 2-150, and each private event booking includes one on one guidance from our resident axe gurus (they’ll have you sticking bulls eyes in no time) before launching you into a round-robin tournament followed by a single elimination playoff. Private events run 2-2.5 hours. BATL Calgary also has a fully licensed bar and kitchen for you and your guests to nibble on artisanal cuisine and quench your thirst on our local beer, wine, and cooler offerings. Find out more about BATL Calgary here, and experience the unique thrill of axe throwing.

If you live in Calgary and you’re looking for more axe throwing you can join BATL’s axe throwing weekly league! With no experience necessary you’ll compete individually while receiving tips from our friendly coaches – and plenty of time to hang out between throwing. To learn more and to join a league click here.

3) Spend a lazy day on the Bow River

The lazy river is a tried and true formula for a day of relaxation, and tubing down the Bow River in Calgary is the ultimate activity for a hot summer day. There’s nothing more relaxing than floating on a river. The gentle moving current, the sun on your face and the cool water below have the uncanny ability to make your troubles disappear, one by one. If you're looking for a cool way to spend a few hours, this is it. Many companies just off the Bow River such as Lazy Day Raft Rentals offer affordable rentals with all the necessary equipment provided.

4) Go art hopping around Calgary

While it might not ring as a world-class art city, Calgary is on the up and coming. Art galleries (both private and public) are popping up all over the city, and making an entire day out of looking at art in Calgary is easier than ever before. Your best bets are checking out TRUCK Contemporary Art in the Beltline area, the Esker Foundation in Inglewood, the Wallace Galleries in the Eau Claire area, and the Contemporary Gallery in East Village.

6) Sample Calgary’s Food Scene

The fine dining scene in Calgary has exploded over the past 5 years, and now is the perfect time to explore everything it has to offer. Chris Lorenz, the man behind the menu in the kitchen for the Backaryd Axe Throwing League (BATL Calgary), recently joined the ream at Diner Deluxe offering refined fair at Aspen Landing in the Southwest of Calgary. If you’re looking for something a little more casual, head on down to 17th Ave SW and visit Tubby Dog for gourmet hot dogs, cold beer, and retro arcade games. In the Northeast, head down to Barlow Trail and 32nd Ave NE for an array of multicultural food options. If you're looking for fine dining with the best view in the city, head downtown and check out Sky 360 - a restaurant at the top of the Calgary Tower.

The next time you plan a trip to Calgary, let us help you make the most of your time at BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League.

Come check out BATL Novi next time you're in the area, and see what all the fuss is about!

2) Take A Day Trip To Detroit

Detroit is so full of history and things to do and see it would be impossible to do it all in 24 hours, but that doesn't mean you still can't have one hell of a day there. A world-class city full of food, art, architecture, music, and everything in between, a trip to Detroit is a must-do while staying in nearby Novi. Start by walking around the downtown core and checking out some of the finest examples of Art Deco architecture in the world, then hop on the People Mover - Detroit's elevated light rail system - to get a bite to eat in the city's Corktown area. You can indulge in the arts at both the Detroit Institute of Art and the Museum of Contemporary Art, or see live music at the Fox Theatre. Finish the evening by checking out a baseball game at Comerica Park, or simply just enjoy the sunset by the Detroit River.

3) Visit The Ann Arbor Art Fair

The Ann Arbor Art Fair is one of Michigan’s finest summer traditions and one of the largest outdoor art fairs in the nation. From Thursday, July 19th to Sunday, July 22nd, the streets of Ann Arbor will transform into an art lover’s paradise where you can experience and enjoy original works of art, street performances, culinary treats and a variety of sidewalk sales. From seasoned art enthusiasts to novice collectors, thousands will make the trip to discover something truly inspiring.

There’s more to the former GM company town than tainted water and blight. The birthplace of General Motors remains a repository of the auto industry’s history with sites like the Durant-Dort Carriage Company, where GM began, and the Sloan Museum, where the Buick gallery displays cars from every era.

5) Spend The Day At Brighton Recreation Area

Sometimes it's nice to just get away. Brighton Recreation Area provides 4,947 acres of refuge for park visitors to use. The area has a combination of high, irregular ranges of hills, interspersed with a number of attractive lakes. Brighton Recreation Area has several miles of trails available for equestrian, mountain biking and hiking. Top Things To Do In Hamilton This Summer

hamilton ontario

Long known as the little brother to Toronto, over the past decade Hamilton, Ontario has grown into its own.  Sure, it's a more affordable option than living in Toronto, Mississauga, Brampton, the list goes on - but it's not just cheap rent that is bringing people to this once thriving industrial city.  Situated on the beautiful Niagara Escarpment, Hamilton and the surrounding area provides countless conservation areas, waterfalls, and trails for the outdoor-minded; on top of its vibrant dining, nightlife, arts, and culture scene.  If you're planning a trip to the City of Hamilton or the Golden Horseshoe this summer, enjoy these recommendations on just a few of the amazing opportunities that the city provides including a trip to The Backyard Axe Throwing League.

1) Try Your Hand At Urban Axe Throwing Aith A Visit To The Backyard Axe Throwing League

While a trip to an indoor axe throwing range might not seem like your classic summer activity, there are bound to be some days that the weather doesn't cooperate and a trip indoors is your only option.  A visit to BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League is sure to keep you and your friends entertained and leave a lasting impression.  Located conveniently in the Jackson Square area of downtown, BATL Hamilton is easily accessible from Burlington, Stoney Creek, St. Catherines, Niagara Falls, Buffalo, and the entire Golden Horseshoe.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League pioneered the sport of urban axe throwing back in 2006, so it's no surprise that we're the best at what we do.  Our weekly league play is what made us famous, but each of our 14 locations across North America offer other ways to get involved with axe throwing.  Our private event group bookings are offered for groups of 2 and up and are perfectly suited for any occasion - adult birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties, corporate team building, or just a summer outing with friends.  Private event bookings include one on one coaching from our expert staff, followed by a round robin tournament and playoff.  If you're looking to get involved in our sport with less commitment, BATL also offers weekly public walk-in sessions with no advance booking required; just show up and hone your skill!  BATL Hamilton offers a fully licensed bar and food menu, meaning all you have to worry about is throwing axes!  Make sure to stop at BATL for some axe throwing next time you're in Hamilton!

2) Visit One Of Hamiltons Many Waterfalls

They don't call it The Waterfall Capital of the World for nothing.  With over one hundred waterfalls just minutes from the downtown core of Hamilton, there's something for everyone when it comes to outdoor adventure in the area.  Most of the waterfalls in Hamilton are situated on the Niagara Escarpment (a UNESCO world biosphere site) in and along the Bruce Trail and can require anywhere from minimal walking to a long distance hike to access.  During the summer months, many of the waterfalls also double as the perfect way to cool down during the heat.

3) Explore The Hamilton Food And Drink Scene

If you think the only restaurant scene in southern Ontario is down the QEW in Toronto, then you obviously haven't visited Hamilton for a meal.  Hamilton (also known as The Hammer) has exploded in the past few years with a number of amazing restaurants and events that celebrate Ontario's rich bounty while remaining earnestly community-oriented.  With places like Jack and Lois, Earth to Table: Bread Bar, and Rapscallion Rogue Eatery there have never been more dining options in Hamilton.  Before you venture out for dinner, consider paying a visit to one of the many breweries in the Hamilton area, such as Collective Arts, Merit Brewing Company, or Grain and Grit Brewing Co.  If beer isn't your thing, downtown Hamilton also offers great cocktail bars such as Bar Sazerac, Two Black Sheep, or L'etranger on James.

4) Visit One Of The Cities Many Museums And Attractions

Hamilton has a wealth of attractions, making this small city seem just as big as any other.  There's the famous Dundurn Castle, a neoclassical mansion on the hill, which was completed in 1835 and is one of the oldest castles in Hamilton.  If you're looking for something a little more contemporary, the Art Gallery of Hamilton might be what you're after.  For the history buffs, Hamilton is also home to the Canadian Warplane Heritage Museum and the HMCS Haida National Historic Site - a Tribal-class destroyer that served in the Royal Canadian Navy from 1943 to 1963, participating in World War II and the Korean War.  If travelling with kids, a trip to African Lion Safari is guaranteed to be a hit.

No matter what you're into, "The Hammer" has a little something for everyone.  Next time you're travelling the Southern Ontario area, be sure to make time for a stop in Hamilton for axe throwing at BATL!
