Party Planning In Toronto

BATL The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Almost 13 years ago the Backyard Axe Throwing League was formed in a downtown Toronto backyard. Fast forward to 2019, BATL has 2 venues in Toronto with a 3rd location opening later this month. BATL Toronto East is situated in the Portlands area of Toronto at the foot of the Don Valley Parkway and is easily accessible from downtown Toronto and QEW/Gardiner Expressway, BATL Yorkdale is situated next to Yorkdale Mall and directly off the 401 highway.

Mark Meszoros of the News-Herald magazine recently took a trip to BATL Toronto and summed up the experience perfectly. "I was pumped to revisit BATL — Backyard Axe Throwing League — and my skills at hurling the handled weapon into targets has come a long way since I set foot in the place the first time. At the risk of bragging, I served as a pseudo instructor to some of the other writers. It’s worth mentioning you now can order a drink at BATL, which was not the case in 2017."

Since our inception in 2006, The Backyard Axe Throwing League has played host to hundreds of bachelor parties, each one guaranteed to leave a lasting impression on all guests. We pioneered the sport of urban axe throwing, so it comes as no surprise that we’re the best at what we do. With 14 locations across North America including one of our newest locations in Nashville, which is a very popular city to host bachelor and bachelorette parties! You can find the rest of our locations in Pickering, Ottawa, Kitchener, London, Niagara Falls, Calgary, and Hamilton in Canada; and Chicago, and Novi/Detroit, Nashville, Scottsdale, and Houston in the US it’s never been easier to find a BATL near you.

Venue Spotlight Featuring BATL Toronto

BATL Toronto | Axe Throwing

The Big Smoke. Hog Town. The 6. Call it what you will, the City of Toronto is nothing less than a thriving hub of creativity and culture. “Toronto” is Huron Indian for “meeting place,” a word which aptly describes one of the most ethnically diverse cities in the world, with over 100 different cultures represented in its population of over 2.5 million. With Lake Ontario to the south, Kawartha Lakes to the east, the Niagara Escarpment to the west, and Lake Simcoe to the north - it's no wonder this "city within a park" is full of luscious scenery. Not only is Toronto the biggest city in Canada, but also the 4th most populous city in North America. The diversity can be seen at the city’s many festivals, friendly neighbourhoods, and of course, its 9,000 restaurants. With a vibrant culture scene like this, it's no surprise that Toronto is home to the birth of urban axe throwing as we know it today.

The History Of BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

The Backyard Axe Throwing League pioneered the sport of urban axe throwing back in 2006, so it’s no surprise that we’re known across the world as the best at what we do. It all started with a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Little did they know that this innocent way to pass the time would soon evolve into the creation of a worldwide sport. Upon returning home to Toronto, BATL founder and CEO Matt Wilson decided to set up a target in his backyard and invite some friends over to show them just how cathartic throwing a sharp axe into wood could be. A point system was created, and soon enough a group of 8 friends would meet every week and engage in some friendly competition. 8 friends quickly grew to 16, and 16 quickly grew to 32. Before he knew it, Matt was hosting 2 full leagues of a total of 60+ per night in his backyard, not including all the spectators that would stop by to catch a glimpse of our exciting new sport.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League in Toronto

Since opening our first indoor venue in Toronto in 2009, BATL Toronto axe throwing has been a go-to destination for thousands of visitors and locals alike. With a Toronto East location servicing downtown Toronto and the Portlands, A Toronto North location serving North York and Markham, and venue opening in the Stock Yards District in West Toronto slated to open next month there are no shortage of opportunities to throw an axe with us from anywhere in Toronto and the surrounding area. It didn't take long before BATL branched out to 15 locations across North America including Pickering, Ottawa, London, Kitchener, Niagara Falls, Calgary, Nashville, Novi (Detroit), Chicago, Houston, and Scottsdale - offering the best axe throwing experience available in the world. From our humble beginnings back in 2006, The Backyard Axe Throwing League has quickly grown into not only a community favourite but also a top destination within the city for a night out with friends or colleagues.

Axe Throwing Leagues at BATL Toronto

The Backyard Axe Throwing League Toronto’s axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. Our leagues are suitable for people of all skill levels, with staff on hand at all times ready to give you tips and tricks to make sure that you’re hitting the bullseye. League play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) umbrella, the worlds foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). Being part of the NATF also gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing. Our weekly axe throwing league play is what made us famous, but each of our 15 locations across North America offers other ways to get involved with axe throwing on a more casual basis.

Top Things To Do In Toronto This Summer

BATL Toronto

The snow is melting, the sun is shining longer, and that can only mean one thing in Toronto: summer is right around the corner. The largest city in Canada and the fourth largest city in North America, there is no shortage of things to do in Toronto in the warm summer months. With boundless parks, festivals, and beaches it can sometimes be a challenge to decide how best to spend your time. Looking for some ideas for things to do in Toronto this summer? Look no further, we have you covered.

Plan A Trip To BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

The sport of urban axe throwing that has taken the world by storm started just as you might think it would: at a cottage with friends. In 2006, founder and CEO Matt Wilson to a cabin just outside of Toronto with his closest pals and after hours of rain, they had to find a way to keep busy. The group began throwing hatches at a tree, and instantly felt the cathartic release of sinking an axe into softwood. Little did they know this was the start of something huge.

Looking to get involved with BATL in Toronto? We offer many ways to get involved in the sport of urban axe throwing that we started back in 2006:

Walk-In Axe Throwing Sessions: If you're looking for a casual way to get involved with the sport of axe throwing, all BATL venues offer public walk-in sessions (no reservations required) every weekend. It's the perfect way to test the water when it comes to axe throwing, with little commitment. Our expert coaches are on hand to guide you the whole way, so whether you're new to the sport or looking to hone in on your skill BATL has you covered.

Private Axe Throwing Event Bookings: BATL offers two types of private event bookings: 1-hour bookings for groups of 2-5 people, and 2-2.5 hour bookings for groups of 6 and up. No matter which private event you book, you'll get the same thing that BATL has become famous for the best one on one instruction from our skilled and friendly staff members, followed by a round robin style tournament and single elimination playoff - all orchestrated by our staff, leaving you with nothing to do but throw axes and enjoy the company of your guests. These parties are perfectly suited to any adult gatherings (bachelor/bachelorette parties, corporate team building, adult birthdays, etc) and many BATL locations offer complete bar and food services, which means even less planning for you.

League Play: It's no secret that the foundations of BATL start with our axe throwing leagues. Thousands strong we show the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots. Our axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. Each season consists of round-robin style tournament play, where you'll throw 28 games against other people in the league, culminating in a top 16 double elimination playoff on week 8. Our leagues are suitable for people of all skill levels, with staff on hand at all times ready to give you tips and tricks to make sure that you're hitting the bullseye. League play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) umbrella, the worlds foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). Being part of the NATF also gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing.

Stroll along a street festival

Toronto loves to shut down streets in the summer and there's a big festival pretty much every weekend. Expect food, vendors and rivers of people to bump into at events like Big on Bloor, OssFest or Taste of the Danforth. Looking for an even bigger street party? Take in the festivities at Pride Toronto. Toronto's Pride celebrations are known around the world for their scale and diversity. A month of celebrations, memorials, rallies, marches and a big street fair comes to a close with the grand finale: the parade, on June 21st.

Ride The Midway At The CNE

The staple of every Toronto summer is the two-week run of the city's downtown carnival from August 16 to September 2, capped off by a big air show and fireworks display spanning Labour Day weekend. Shows, rides, rib fests and speciality goodies are what makes this event so fun. Perfect for a day out with friends or family alike, no summer in Toronto is complete without visiting the CNE.

Hit The Beach

There is no shortage of beaches in Toronto: regular beaches, secret beaches and clothing-optional beaches. Many of the beaches are blue flag designated, meaning they are perfect for swimming. You can stick on the mainland, or make a day of it and take the ferry across to the Toronto Islands and spend the day on a beach that will have you forgetting that you're in the middle of a large city. Pick and choose which you'd like to go, slap on the sunscreen and go. It's that easy.

Experience The Cultures Of Kensington Market

An eclectic and totally bohemian jumble of the weird and wonderful. Seek out charming vintage stores, record shops and chilled out cafes for coffee breaks. Quirky hipster hangouts and underground speakeasies more your thing? No worries, Kensington has long been an artists’ hub, a fact that's apparent from the counter-culture performance spaces and art galleries.

Spend The Day Indoors

Summer weather not cooperating? Toronto has many options when looking for a day of refuge. Check out some art at the Art Gallery of Ontario or Museum of Modern Contemporary Art, learn about history at the Royal Ontario Museum, or enjoy the breathtaking panoramic views atop the CN Tower.

Enjoy all that Toronto and BATL Toronto has to offer this summer because we all know that the nice weather doesn't last forever!

Take A Trip To The Grand Canyon

"Nothing can compete with the awe-inspiring power of Mother Nature, and visiting the Grand Canyon is a memorable experience, whether by car or foot. And while you’re sure to have the instinct to Insta-memorialize your visit, take at least a few moments to enjoy the experience with your senses. The South Rim is by far the most popular (consider reservations months in advance for tours or other special experiences). If you have several hours to explore, try a hike along the popular Bright Angel trail. Travel as far as you’re comfortable—just remember you have to hike the same distance, uphill, to get out. Bring snacks and water to stay safe, and wear responsibly comfortable footwear."

Check Out The Painted Desert

"A swath of land encompassing nearly 100,000 acres, the Painted Desert is aptly named. Forget your impression of brown and boring desert land; the Painted Desert is awash in color, from deep red hues to lovely lavender. It’s like the sunset imprinted itself on the land. The Petrified Forest is located within the Painted Desert and is one of the best places to stop and enjoy the view peacefully. Visit the Painted Desert Inn National Historic Landmark, located near the north entrance of the Petrified Forest National Park, to take in the views from several vantage points."

Be Part Of A Historical Backdrop At Monument Valley

"Ansel Adams’ photographs might have introduced you to Monument Valley. Hollywood Westerns probably enticed you to visit. And when you finally do, you’ll realize that this remarkably remote region of Arizona and Utah is impossible to view in a single frame. Like much of Arizona, this region is best viewed by hitting the road. A single, 17-mile drive along Valley Drive will provide views of the famous monuments you learned in your youth—the Mittens and Totem Pole, among others. It takes 2-4 hours and will cost $20. You’ll likely find it’s worth every penny."

Raft The Colorado River

"If a simple hike along the Grand Canyon isn’t exciting enough for you, just add water and your experience will have all the adrenaline you need. Colorado River rafting trips have become the experience of choice for thrill-seekers. Sign up for a single-day adventure to jostle your joints. For the full experience, consider a multi-day adventure where you’ll brave rapids, watch nature, and view northern Arizona from a different vantage point."

No matter what you plan on seeing on your next trip to Arizona, no adventure is complete without a stop in at BATL. Stop into our Scottsdale venue, and experience firsthand the unique thrill of urban axe throwing!

BATL Houston Opening April 2019!

Axe Throwing at BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

BATL's 15th venue is on the way this spring, and it's going to be calling Houston, Texas it's home. The Houston metro area has long been known as a hub for creativity and entrepreneurial spirit, as well as a thriving hub for arts, culture, and dining. Naturally, all of those factors make BATL a perfect fit - and we're excited to bring our unique sport of urban axe throwing (pioneered by us back in 2006) to the Lone Star State.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League is excited to become part of the Houston community, opening our 15th location later this year that will serve the entire area of Greater Houston including The Woodlands, Sugar Land, Baytown, and Conroe.

The History of Axe Throwing

The sport of axe throwing was established in 2006 in the Toronto backyard of Matt Wilson. What started as a personal passion sparked by a camping trip with friends soon spread through word-of-mouth in Toronto. Matt Wilson spent his career learning the ropes of the hospitality business in Toronto, which enabled the creation of the first-ever urban axe throwing venue in Toronto, The Backyard Axe Throwing League. Urban axe throwing is comprised of ‘arenas,’ which are similar to a cross between a batting cage and bowling alley, with private space for groups of any size.

BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump.

It didn't take long before the Backyard Axe Throwing League had outgrown its very own backyard. As you can imagine, putting that many people in a small outdoor space together got very loud very fast, and noise complaints were coming to a frequent issue. Not to mention, word had spread throughout the city so fast that the waitlist to join a league was becoming never ending. In 2011, BATL moved its operations indoors and secured an industrial space in the west end of Toronto. We instantly had leagues running four nights a week, and soon after opened up to private group bookings (perfectly suited for bachelor and bachelorette parties, adult birthdays, corporate team building, or a night out with friends). Fast forward to 2018, the Backyard Axe Throwing League now has 15 locations across North America, all of which offer up the urban axe throwing experience that we pioneered over 12 years ago.

A Visit to BATL Houston

At BATL Houston, we stand by the belief that throwing an epic party should be fun and simple. Private event packages include 1- 2.5 hours of throwing depending on your group size, flexible food options and private space to fit your party’s needs. Trophies and streetwear are available as add-ons for an even more personal touch. Things begin with practice and instruction (no experience necessary!) from BATL’s expert coaches before starting a round robin and group playoff tournament. Private events cost $35.99 – $42.99 + tax per person and are perfectly suited to adult birthday parties, corporate team building events, and bachelor/bachelorette parties.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League offers axe throwing on a walk-in basis at designated times each week. Our coaches will be on hand to instruct those who have never thrown an axe before, and offer tips on technique for more experienced throwers looking to sharpen their skills. Similar to public skating, skiing or swimming – guests throw in a common area with other participants, and may need to make allowance for shared space based on friendly guidance from your BATL coach.

Our leagues are the perfect excuse to get together with friends, make a few new ones and enjoy a little competition. With no experience necessary you’ll compete individually while receiving tips from our friendly coaches – and plenty of time to hang out between throwing. Our calendar culminates in the National Axe Throwing Championship, with qualifying players competing against the best throwers globally for the Wilson Cup and prize money.

Stay tuned for our grand opening announcements, including one month of free open house axe throwing at BATL Houston.

Our axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. 2019 National Axe Throwing Championship & All-Star Weekend Wrap Up

2019 All-Star Weekend Results

Now that the dust has finally settled, we've had a chance to look back on this past All-Star Weekend, and 3rd annual National Axe Throwing Championship - and boy, what a time it was.

The 2019 All-Star Weekend

The weekend started on Sunday morning with 192 competitors being split across 3 BATL locations on the Greater Toronto Area, including BATL Toronto, BATL Yorkdale, and BATL Pickering. The competition was fierce, as you can imagine. The top 192 throwers came from 15 different venues across North America - each of them at the top of their leagues, going through nearly a year of qualifiers with one goal in mind: being the top-ranked axe thrower in the world.

By noon, the entire tournament had shifted over to BATL Pickering, with competitors being brought over by the busload. With nearly 600 people watching and participating in the building, the energy was palpable. Everything was exactly as advertised: this was a showcase of elite axe throwing as we have never seen before, complete with upsets, early exits, and good stories.

The 2019 NATC Results

5 of the final 6 throwers hailed from BATL, with the one exception being 5th place Mike Kump out of Urban Axes Philadelphia. One of the feel-good stories of the afternoon was the third-place finisher Philip LaChance, who had only started axe throwing at BATL Toronto one year previous. In the end, the storyline played out like a feel-good classic. The final match came down was between Straun Riley (last years NATC champion) and Julio Romero, two best friends who both got their start together at BATL Yorkdale. As you can imagine, it was nothing but bullseyes, clutches, and big axes. Julio managed to take the first set, but in the end, it was last year's champion Straun Riley that secured the victory (and $10,000 of the $20,000 prize purse). Congratulations to Straun, and hats off to everyone else that competed for their hearts out throughout the day.

After the main event was over, we wasted no time and went directly into the Winter Skills portion of the day - where trick shots and skill games took centre stage by competing in Time Trials, Around the World, Doubles, and Ambidextrous events. In the end, members of BATL ended up taking down 3 out of 4 of the events.

Axe Prom & Awards Ceremony

To wrap it up on Monday, the axe throwing community descended in hundreds on the Palais Royale Ballroom in downtown Toronto to celebrate a night of awards, dinner, and dancing - all while dressed to the nines. We'd like to thank everyone for coming out and making the entire weekend such a success, and we can't wait to do it all over again a year from now. Of course, none of this would be possible without our sponsors. Thanks to Beau's All Natural Brewing, Cherry Street Bar-B-Q, Woodhouse, Peller Estates Winery, Nutrl Vodka, Home Depot, Harley Davidson, Baitshop Printing, The Dock Ellis, The Aviary, and The Greater Good.

National Axe Throwing Federation Leagues

Join The Axe Throwing League Community

Joining an axe throwing league is a great excuse to get out of the house and engage in some weekly friendly competition. But more than that, it's a chance to meet new friends and be part of an extremely tight-knit community. At BATL, our mission is to show people the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots. Our league members come from all walks of life, and are some of the most interesting people you'll ever meet - and we can guarantee that you'll make lasting friendships in the process. BATL Houston Opening April 2019!

Axe Throwing at BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Axe Throwing in Houston

Construction is ramping up on our newest venue in the Lone Star State, and we couldn't be more excited. BATL's 15th venue will be opening its doors in the spring of 2019 in Houston, Texas. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and this will be no exception. While you're waiting for our grand opening (complete with a month of free open house axe throwing, as always), why not take the time to get familiar with BATL: The Backyard Axe Throwing League?

BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

It's been almost 13 years since the Backyard Axe Throwing League brought urban axe throwing to the masses, using the axe as a tool to bring people together. Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump.

Before long, we had to move our operations indoors - which led to opening 10 locations across Canada between 2015-2018. That was just the beginning.

Axe Throwing Expansion Into The US

In 2017, BATL stepped across the border to open our very first location in the United States. We partnered with Throw Nashville to bring BATL’s brand of urban axe throwing to Music City, and that would mark the beginning of our US growth. Shortly after, we teamed forces with Thunderbolt Axe Throwing to bring BATL's brand of urban axe throwing to the Chicago Masses. It instantly caught on in the windy city, and BATL Chicago has been a driving force in the community or Irving Park ever since. In 2018, we opened the doors to BATL Novi, bringing axe throwing to metro Detroit. Finally, in December of 2018, BATL Scottsdale opened to the public, bringing axe throwing to the Valley of the Sun. The Phoenix greater area now as the ability to experience the unique thrill provided by axe throwing, and we're excited to begin to grow the sport. Next up...BATL Houston, just one of the 6+ venues BATL will be opening in the United States in 2019.

Experience Axe Throwing at BATL Scottsdale

BATL Scottsdale

Our first month in the Valley of the Sun has been nothing less than amazing. Since opening our doors to the public in late December of 2018, BATL Scottsdale welcomed hundreds of new axe throwers from all over Arizona with our free open house axe throwing sessions each Friday and Saturday night. Now that the open houses are wrapped up, BATL Scottsdale is in full swing!

History of Urban Axe Throwing

It's been almost 13 years since the Backyard Axe Throwing League brought urban axe throwing to the masses, using the axe as a tool to bring people together. Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump.

We instantly had leagues running four nights a week, and soon after opened up to private group bookings.

In 2017, BATL stepped across the border to open our very first location in the United States. We partnered with Throw Nashville to bring BATL's brand of urban axe throwing to Music City, and that would just be the beginning of our US growth. BATL now has 14 locations across North America (including Toronto, Pickering, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, London, Kitchener, Hamilton, and Calgary in Canada; in addition to Novi, Nashville, Chicago, and Scottsdale in the United States - with more on the way this year!).
