BATL Houston Opening April 2019!

Axe Throwing at BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Axe Throwing in Houston

Construction is ramping up on our newest venue in the Lone Star State, and we couldn't be more excited. BATL's 15th venue will be opening its doors in the spring of 2019 in Houston, Texas. They say everything is bigger in Texas, and this will be no exception. While you're waiting for our grand opening (complete with a month of free open house axe throwing, as always), why not take the time to get familiar with BATL: The Backyard Axe Throwing League?

BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

It's been almost 13 years since the Backyard Axe Throwing League brought urban axe throwing to the masses, using the axe as a tool to bring people together. Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Little did they know that this innocent way to pass the time would soon evolve into the creation of a worldwide sport.

Upon returning home to Toronto, BATL founder and CEO Matt Wilson decided to set up a target in his backyard and invite some friends over to show them just how cathartic throwing a sharp axe into wood could be. A point system was created, and soon enough a group of 8 friends would meet every week and engage in some friendly competition. 8 friends quickly grew to 16, and 16 quickly grew to 32. Before he knew it, Matt was hosting 2 full leagues of a total of 60+ per night in his backyard, not including all the spectators that would stop by to catch a glimpse of our exciting new sport. Before long, we had to move our operations indoors - which led to opening 10 locations across Canada between 2015-2018. That was just the beginning.

Axe Throwing Expansion Into The US

In 2017, BATL stepped across the border to open our very first location in the United States. We partnered with Throw Nashville to bring BATL’s brand of urban axe throwing to Music City, and that would mark the beginning of our US growth. Shortly after, we teamed forces with Thunderbolt Axe Throwing to bring BATL's brand of urban axe throwing to the Chicago Masses. It instantly caught on in the windy city, and BATL Chicago has been a driving force in the community or Irving Park ever since. In 2018, we opened the doors to BATL Novi, bringing axe throwing to metro Detroit. Finally, in December of 2018, BATL Scottsdale opened to the public, bringing axe throwing to the Valley of the Sun. The Phoenix greater area now as the ability to experience the unique thrill provided by axe throwing, and we're excited to begin to grow the sport. Next up...BATL Houston, just one of the 6+ venues BATL will be opening in the United States in 2019.

Experience Axe Throwing at BATL Scottsdale

BATL Scottsdale

Our first month in the Valley of the Sun has been nothing less than amazing. Since opening our doors to the public in late December of 2018, BATL Scottsdale welcomed hundreds of new axe throwers from all over Arizona with our free open house axe throwing sessions each Friday and Saturday night. Now that the open houses are wrapped up, BATL Scottsdale is in full swing!

History of Urban Axe Throwing

It's been almost 13 years since the Backyard Axe Throwing League brought urban axe throwing to the masses, using the axe as a tool to bring people together. Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Celebrating 2 Years of BATL Niagara

BATL Niagara Falls

Niagara Falls, Canada, doesn't need any introduction. As one of the seven natural Wonders of the World, Niagara Falls is a destination year round averaging 12+ Million visitors annually. First incorporated in 1903, the city of Niagara Falls may be famous for its namesake, but has been steadily growing as a top destination for more than just the falls. Sure, it's known as the honeymoon capital of Canada, but that's not where it stops.

Niagara Falls, Ontario

Niagara Falls is a favourite destination for young and old alike. Unlike many other destinations in the world, Niagara Falls has spots and attractions that cater to everyone's tastes. With new attractions and events, Niagara Falls continues to grow and attracts more and more people through the year. If you're looking for action and excitement, head down to Clifton Hills. Chalk full of museums, bars, casinos, restaurants, Ferris wheels, and much much more, it's sure to keep you entertained for hours.

If you're looking to get away from the lights, noise, and general chaos of Clifton Hill you're in luck. Nature goes beyond the falls in the Niagara Region. The Niagara Escarpment runs through The United States and Canada, and offers spectacular views of nature around Niagara Falls - especially in the autumn when the fall leaves are at their brightest. The Niagara Escarpment is a UNESCO World Biosphere Reserve, as it has the oldest forest ecosystem and trees in eastern North America. Up until a few years ago, the only thing missing in Niagara Falls was the unique urban axe throwing experience taking the rest of North America by storm since 2006. But that all changed in 2016.

Serving the entire Niagara Region – including Welland, St. Catherines and Fort Erie from the historic centre of Niagara Falls, BATL Niagara is located less than five minutes from local attractions including Fallsview Casino, Casino Niagara, Clifton Hill and the Rainbow Bridge, as well as other local attractions such as wine country and Niagara on the Lake. Our intimate Queen Street location situated in the historic Woolworths building is perfectly situated for locals and visitors alike to participate in axe throwing leagues and private group tournaments.

BATL Niagara Falls

We're thrilled to have called Niagara home since November 2016. By January of 2017, BATL had begun running leagues and had already played host to countless new axe throwers from both our private group bookings and public walk-in axe throwing sessions. Since then BATL Niagara has gone on to work with the community around us by taking part in charitable events, street festivals, and much more. We're happy to be part of the community and can't wait to see what the future has in store. If you haven't visited us yet, BATL offers multiple ways to get involved with our sport.

Axe Throwing Leagues

BATL Niagara's axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. Each season consists of round-robin style tournament play, where you'll throw 28 games against other people in the league, culminating in a top 16 double elimination playoff on week 8. Our leagues are suitable for people of all skill levels, with staff on hand at all times ready to give you tips and tricks to make sure that you're hitting the bullseye. League play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) umbrella, the worlds foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). Being part of the NATF also gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing.

Public Walk-In Sessions

If you're looking for a casual way to get involved with the sport of axe throwing, this is for you. BATL Niagara offers public walk-in sessions (no reservations required) every weekend. It's the perfect way to test the water when it comes to axe throwing, with little commitment. Our expert coaches are on hand to guide you the whole way, so whether you're new to the sport or looking to hone in on your skill we've got you covered.

Private Axe Throwing Group Events

BATL Niagara offers private axe throwing group bookings for groups of 2 and up, and are perfectly suited to adult birthday parties, corporate team building events, bachelor/bachelorette parties, and much more. Our private events last 2-2.5 hours and are run in the safe and comfortable environment that BATL has become famous for by our expertly trained staff, who also happen to be the best axe throwers in the planet. They will run you and your guests through training to ensure that you're all sticking bullseyes before launching you into a round robin tournament, followed by a playoff (in order to crown a champion, of course). A little friendly competition is a key to any outing with friends, and Backyard Axe Throwing League Niagara also offers a fully licensed bar and food menu - so you can worry about throwing axes and leave the rest to us!

Trying to figure out what else to do with your time in Niagara Falls? We've got you covered.

They say everything is bigger in Texas. This is going to be no exception. The cat is out of the bag: BATL's 15th venue is on the way this spring, and it's going to be calling Houston, Texas it's home. The City of Houston website puts it best:

"Alive with energy and rich in diversity, Houston is a dynamic mix of imagination, talent and first-class attractions that makes it a world-class city. Home to a vibrant economy, beautiful surroundings and a population full of optimism and spirit, it's no wonder that Houston is a popular international destination.

For sports fans, we have local teams representing all major sports. Do some shopping; Houston offers something to fit every budget - from the exclusive shops in Houston's Uptown area to the outlet malls just outside the City..."

All it was missing? BATL's brand of urban axe throwing.

The History of Axe Throwing

The sport of axe throwing was established in 2006 in the Toronto backyard of Matt Wilson. What started as a personal passion sparked by a camping trip with friends soon spread through word-of-mouth in Toronto. Matt Wilson spent his career learning the ropes of the hospitality business in Toronto, which enabled the creation of the first-ever urban axe throwing venue in Toronto, The Backyard Axe Throwing League. Urban axe throwing is comprised of ‘arenas,’ which are similar to a cross between a batting cage and bowling alley, with private space for groups of any size.

BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

The Backyard Axe Throwing League’s mission is to show people the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build a community inspired by the background roots. Matt Wilson's BATL is the first organization in the world to offer an urban venue to experience the thrill of indoor axe throwing. Today over 1.5 million people have experienced the thrill of the sport across the globe. With the success of BATL in the Greater Toronto Area, expansion was possible into Pickering, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, London, Kitchener, Hamilton, and Calgary in Canada; in addition to Novi, Nashville, Scottsdale and Chicago in the United States - with more on the way! This has encouraged and excited celebrities and television show segments such as; Hockey Wives, Grand Opry’s Another Round, Ruby Rose, Vin Diesel, Gerard Butler, George Parros, Clive Standen, Hannibal Buress, and many more.

A Visit to BATL Houston

At BATL Houston, we stand by the belief that throwing an epic party should be fun and simple. Private event packages include 1- 2.5 hours of throwing depending on your group size, flexible food options and private space to fit your party’s needs. Trophies and streetwear are available as add-ons for an even more personal touch. Things begin with practice and instruction (no experience necessary!) from BATL’s expert coaches before starting a round robin and group playoff tournament. Private events cost $35.99 – $42.99 + tax per person and are perfectly suited to adult birthday parties, corporate team building events, and bachelor/bachelorette parties.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League offers axe throwing on a walk-in basis at designated times each week. Our coaches will be on hand to instruct those who have never thrown an axe before, and offer tips on technique for more experienced throwers looking to sharpen their skills. Similar to public skating, skiing or swimming – guests throw in a common area with other participants, and may need to make allowance for shared space based on friendly guidance from your BATL coach.

Our axe throwing leagues are the perfect excuse to get together with friends, make a few new ones and enjoy a little competition. With no experience necessary you’ll compete individually while receiving tips from our friendly coaches – and plenty of time to hang out between throwing. Our calendar culminates in the National Axe Throwing Championship, with qualifying players competing against the best throwers globally for the Wilson Cup and $7500 in prize money.

Stay tuned for our grand opening announcements, which as always will include one month of free open house axe throwing! Wondering what to do while you wait for BATL to set up shop in Houston? We've got you covered...

What To Do in Houston via VisitHoustonTexas.com

Head To Minute Maid Park

The 2017 World Series Champion Houston Astros have called Houston 'home' since 1962. The 'Stros, as locals lovingly call their hometown baseball team, began playing at Colt Stadium, moved to the world-famous Astrodome in 1965, and now reside at Minute Maid Park in Downtown Houston, since 2000.

Minute Maid Park, completed in 2000, is the Houston Astros' downtown home. Minute Maid Park's retractable roof technology brought open-air baseball to Houston for the first time in 35 years, and the natural grass surface and classic architecture provided Minute Maid Park with the atmosphere of the great ballparks of baseball's Golden age.

Visit The Cistern At Buffalo Bayou Park

Built in 1926, an underground cistern was used for decades to hold a large portion of Houston’s public drinking water. After it sprang an irreparable leak, the 85,000 square-foot public reservoirs were drained and sat unused and practically forgotten about. The hypnotic beauty of the chamber is reminiscent of Istanbul’s Basilica Cistern but with thin rays of light from open hatches above that illuminate the wide expanse.

Spend The Day At Space Center Houston

Space Center Houston, the Official Visitor Center of NASA Johnson Space Center, is Houston’s No. 1 attraction for international visitors and the first Smithsonian Affiliate in the greater Houston area. Discover the exciting future and remarkable past of America’s human spaceflight program set among the largest collection of space artefacts in the southwestern United States.

Shop It Away At The Galleria

The Galleria, an international shopping destination that hosts more than 24 million visitors annually, offers world-class shopping with more than 375 stores, 30 restaurants, two hotels, and a full-sized ice rink. 2 million square feet of retailers means hours of shopping possibilities.

Get The Meat Sweats At Jackson Street BBQ

The pits are fired up and ready to barbeque at Jackson Street BBQ in downtown Houston near Minute Maid Park. The joint venture is the brainchild of Houston BBQ legends Bryan Caswell, Bill Floyd and Greg Gatlin. Their combined expertise will surely satiate the hunger of any barbecue lover in a laid-back environment with counter service and good vibes.

Head through the cafeteria-style line and pile on the smoked brisket, ribs, chicken and coleslaw then top it off with a homemade slice of pie. In the near future, look forward to plenty of seafood fare as well including barbecue crab, shrimp and crawfish.

Players took to their assigned lane, then went on to throw the equivalent of 3 matches (a total of 45 throws) and 9 Big Axes. Now that the results are in, the matchups are set for an all-day affair featuring 192 competitors vying for urban axe throwing's most prestigious title - winner of the Wilson Cup.

NATC: Round 2

Enter: The National Axe Throwing Championship. The top 192 ranked players from Round 1 will meet in an all-day affair, culminating in one champion. New Seasons of League at BATL

As we say farewell to 2018 and welcome in 2019, most axe throwers have one thing in mind: new league seasons beginning soon. 2018 saw records surpassed, new records created, and the same camaraderie that all of our league members have come to know and love since our inception in 2006. Perhaps to fully understand, we've got to go all the way back to the beginning.

BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

It didn't take long before the Backyard Axe Throwing League had outgrown its very own backyard. As you can imagine, putting that many people in a small outdoor space together got very loud very fast, and noise complaints were coming to a frequent issue. Not to mention, word had spread throughout the city so fast that the waitlist to join a league was becoming never ending. In 2011, BATL moved its operations indoors and secured an industrial space in the west end of Toronto. We instantly had leagues running four nights a week, and soon after opened up to private group bookings (perfectly suited for bachelor and bachelorette parties, adult birthdays, corporate team building, or a night out with friends). Fast forward to 2018, the Backyard Axe Throwing League now has 14 locations across North America, all of which offer up the urban axe throwing experience that we pioneered over 12 years ago.

Perfect for both newcomers and experienced axe throwers, joining an axe throwing league is the perfect way to get out of the house in 2019 - and make some lasting relationships while you're at it.

Axe Throwing Leagues at BATL

Our axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. With 14 locations across North America (including Toronto, Pickering, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, Hamilton, London, Kitchener, and Calgary in Canada; and Chicago, Novi, Scottsdale and Nashville in the United States) it's never been easier to get involved in our sport.

Our 8-week leagues cost $119.95 +tax with payment options available as low as $17.85/ week. Throw in 2 or more nights and take advantage of 40% off additional seasons! For our die hard league members, we also offer a VIP package. For $597.97 you can enjoy access to as many league nights as you want over a 12-month period! Already in a league and want to bring a friend? Get them to sign-up for a season and receive $25 BATL Bucks for use at any location!

National Axe Throwing Federation

On top of that, joining an axe throwing league is your membership card to the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF). The NATF was established in 2016 to service the sport of axe throwing globally, with a vision to create broad and standardized competition amongst players, while providing member support through a mandate to promote universal safety, sportsmanship and competitive protocol. All league play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation umbrella, the worlds foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). Currently sitting at over 45000 league members worldwide, being part of the NATF gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing.

Axe Throwing Tournaments

The NATF also hosts yearly tournaments at BATL, most notably the Summer Skills Competition and the National Axe Throwing Championships (NATC) and All-Star Weekend. The next NATC takes place in February of 2019 and is a day-long tournament that will be in its 9th year. The top four members in each league from all NATF members qualify for the pre-tournament, which ends up as a top 128 double elimination tournament. On top of a cash prize, the winner also gets to take home the Wilson Cup - named after BATL founder Matt Wilson.

The BATL Community

Joining an axe throwing league is a great excuse to get out of the house and engage in some weekly friendly competition. But more than that, it's a chance to meet new friends and be part of an extremely tight-knit community. At BATL, our mission is to show people the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots. Our league members come from all walks of life, and are some of the most interesting people you'll ever meet - and we can guarantee that you'll make lasting friendships in the process. We’re immensely proud to have been the first organization in the world to offer an urban venue to experience the thrill of indoor axe throwing in leagues, walk-ins, group parties and team building.

BATL: Our Year in Review

BATL | The Backyard Axe Throwing Leauge

It all started almost 13 years ago, in a fairly predictable fashion: on a trip to a cabin in the woods. Back in 2006, founder and CEO Matt Wilson to a cabin in Southern Ontario with his closest pals and after hours of rain, they had to find a way to keep busy. The group began throwing hatches at a tree, and instantly felt the cathartic release of sinking an axe into softwood. They might not have known it at the time, but this was the start of something huge.

With 2018 ending and our sights firmly set on 2019, it's important to take a minute to think about the year that passed. 2018 was a huge year for the Backyard Axe Throwing League, and we're happy to have been able to share it with everyone. After the immediate success of our first location in the United States with BATL Nashville, we started off 2018 by cementing in the US market, cementing BATL as the premier axe throwing destination in the world.

BATL's US Expansion

First up in January of 2018, BATL joined forces with Thunderbolt Axe Throwing to bring BATL Chicago to the masses. Just north-west of the popular Bucktown and Logan Square areas is where you'll find BATL Chicago. Situated n the area of Old Irving Park, and just blocks away from Irving Park Station on the MTA Blue Line, BATL Chicago has been bringing the thrill of urban axe throwing to the Windy City for over a year now, and we're just getting started.

Earlier this year, BATL opened its 3rd venue in the US (in the past year, no less). Situated just 8 miles from the City of Detroit, the community of Novi has been one of the fastest growing cities in the state of Michigan for years. The Backyard Axe Throwing League Novi opened earlier this year and is the premier axe throwing facility in metro Detroit. The venue is located at Twelve Mile Crossing at Fountain Walk near West Oaks Shopping Centre, in the heart of Novi. Our newest location has been an instant success thanks to a warm welcome from our surrounding community, and we're excited to continue bringing the unique thrill of axe throwing to Metro Detroit.

To end the year with a bang, we set our sights on Arizona. This December, BATL Scottsdale opened its doors, bringing our unique brand of fun to the Valley of the Sun. Scottsdale may have a reputation as a travel destination, but it’s also a city brimming with a vibrant community, arts, and much more. It's a city that promises abundant amenities, from vibrant outdoor activities and sports to a thriving downtown and waterfront. The city of over 220,000 inhabitants is known for the excellent quality of life mixed with tourist appeal. BATL is excited to become part of the Scottsdale community, opening our 14th location that will serve the entire area of Greater Phoenix including Tempe, Glendale, Mesa, Peoria, and more.

Axe Throwing & Charitable Support

In 2018, BATL supported the cause of more than 350 local, regional, and national organizations across North America. Through private fundraising events, we helped raise over $250,000 for registered charities. In addition to that, BATL itself contributed over $20,000 to The Red Door Family Shelter - which is a non-profit that features a dedicated and caring staff team address the particular needs of families in crisis.

At The Backyard Axe Throwing League, we're always looking for new ways to make a positive impact on the communities surrounding our venues. Since 2006 we’ve hosted dozens of fundraising events and donated our services to a number of local charities and non-profit organizations such as schools, hospitals and other special causes. With 14 locations in North America (including Toronto, Niagara Falls, London, Kitchener, Pickering, Ottawa, Calgary, Nashville, Chicago, Detroit (Novi), and Scottsdale) we have a unique opportunity to make a real difference in all the communities that we are part of, and we're always searching for more ways to spread the love. The Backyard Axe Throwing League prides itself in being a strong social hub and positive corporate citizen in all communities in which we operate. Each location works directly with local charities on a monthly basis to support axe throwing fundraising activities.

If you are looking for a unique experience for your charitable fundraiser, look no further. The Backyard Axe Throwing League is the perfect backdrop for you and your guests to raise money while competing in the friendly competition, all under the guidance of our expertly trained coaches in a safe environment. To find out more about hosting your next charitable event, head to our website and contact us!

National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) And AxeScores

As BATL has spread urban axe throwing across North America and beyond, we have been constantly pushing the boundaries of the sport. This is most evidenced in the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) - of which BATL is a founding member - and our AxeScores program. Through AxeScores we've tracked over 25 Million unique axe throws, and we're just scratching the surface. 2018 saw hundreds of people join an axe throwing league (joining the thousands already represented in the NATF), with many of them competing in tournaments throughout the US and Canada. BATL's very own Straun Riley (now the GM of our newest Scottsdale location) took home the National Axe Throwing Championship at this year's event held at BATL Toronto, and countless members experienced the community vibes that are the essence of all of our axe throwing leagues.

We want to say thank you to everyone that helped make this such a special year for BATL - we truly couldn't have done it without you - and we can't wait to share what we have in store for 2019 with you. From all of us at BATL, we wish you a happy and healthy 2019!

Experience Axe Throwing in Phoenix

BATL Phoenix

We’re BATL | The Backyard Axe Throwing League

From our humble beginnings in 2006 the Backyard Axe Throwing League has steadily grown the sport that we created in our own backyard across not just North America, but across the world. We’ve hosted thousands of new axe throwers across our 14 venues, using our advanced axe throwing statistic software (AxeScores.com) to track totals of millions of axe throws. Even though we’ve brought our sport to the mainstream, there are still many who have yet to experience firsthand the unique thrill of throwing an axe. So, what exactly is BATL, and what do we do?

The sport of urban axe throwing that has taken the world by storm started just as you might think it would: at a cottage with friends. In 2006, founder and CEO Matt Wilson to a cabin in Southern Ontario with his closest pals and after hours of rain, they had to find a way to keep busy. The group began throwing hatches at a tree, and instantly felt the cathartic release of sinking an axe into softwood.

Bringing Axe Throwing to the USA

In 2017, BATL stepped across the border to open our very first location in the United States. We partnered with Throw Nashville to bring BATL’s brand of urban axe throwing to Music City, and that would mark the beginning of our US growth.

We wanted to keep the ball rolling, so shortly after the opening of our Nashville venue, BATL set its sights on the windy city. Founded by Scott Hollander, Thunderbolt Axe Throwing was the first-ever axe throwing venue in Chicago – and was a perfect fit to team up with BATL. Located in the Portage Park neighbourhood, near the surrounding neighbourhoods of Old Irving Park, Avondale, Dunning and Des Plaines. Hollander is an axe thrower himself and former lawyer who has a passion for showing people a good time, throwing fun events and teaching people how to throw axes. Thunderbolt Axe Throwing Chicago gained local press in Voyage Chicago, the Chicago Tribune and Chicago Tonight amongst other news outlets.

Our newest location has been an instant success thanks to a warm welcome from our surrounding community, and we’re excited to continue bringing the unique thrill of axe throwing to Metro Detroit.
This is just the beginning of our growth in the United States with our newest location in Phoenix and over 6 more planned for 2019 in the USA.

BATL Phoenix

Phoenix may have a reputation as a travel destination, but it’s also a city brimming with a vibrant community, arts, and much more. It’s a city that promises abundant amenities, from vibrant outdoor activities and sports to a thriving downtown and waterfront. The city of over 220,000 inhabitants is known for the excellent quality of life mixed with tourist appeal. Not just a city of retirees, people are flocking to Phoenix for its family-friendly reputation. With a buzzing arts and culture scene, many schools that are ranked top in the state, and endless potential for outdoor activity, it’s no wonder that the younger demographic are taking Phoenix by storm. The downtown area – known as Old Town Scottsdale – is one of the most unique urban downtown centres in the American Southwest. Its pedestrian-friendly streets are home to world-class art galleries, museums, restaurants and retail shops. When the sun goes down, the area really shines – with world-class bars, restaurants, and nightlife options. Old Town Scottsdale is also known for hosting great events throughout the year such as markets, art walks, festivals, parades, concerts, and block parties.

2018 Wild Cards Weekend At BATL

2018 Wild Cards

Wild Cards Wrap Up

With our 2018 league seasons all wrapped up, all BATL league members are getting ramped up for this year's National Axe Throwing Championship (NATC) taking place this coming February 17th and 18th in Toronto. The Wild Card Tournament took place at all BATL venues across North America December 16th and were open to any thrower at The Backyard Axe Throwing League who had competed in at least one league season in 2018 and had not yet qualified for the NATC. The Wild Card Tournament was a double elimination affair and delivered on the promise of some fierce competition between throwers trying to get a foot in the door for Round 1 of the NATC. We just wanted to say congratulations to all the winners of the Wild Card Tournament and wanted to wish them the best of luck going into Round 1.

NATC: Round 1

The preliminary round (Round 1) is a competition within each NATF member organization to determine which players will represent them in the final stage of the tournament, and will be taking place on January 6th, 2019. In the preliminary round, players will be randomly split into groups of four. Players will take to their assigned lane, then throw the equivalent of 3 matches (a total of 45 throws) and 9 Big Axes. From there, your overall average will be ranked against all other participants across North America.

NATC, Winter Skills, and the Axe Prom & Awards Ceremony

This is what it's all about - the dream of every axe thrower in the National Axe Throwing Federation: winning the NATC. The top 192 ranked players from Round 1 will meet in an all-day affair, culminating in one champion. The National Axe Throwing Championship will be taking place February 18th in Toronto as part of the 8th annual All-Star Weekend hosted by The Backyard Axe Throwing League. All qualifying league competitors from all over North America, including many from the Backyard Axe Throwing League, will be facing off for their chance at not only bragging rights but also prize money for the top 3 competitors. After that, we begin the 2018 Winter Skills competition, showcasing the most skilled throwers battling it out for their chance at glory.

Once the dust has settled, we'll be ending it all off on the evening of February 18th with our annual Axe Prom & Awards Ceremony, taking place at Palais Royale in Toronto. Our league members come from all walks of life, and are some of the most interesting people you'll ever meet - and we can guarantee that will be on full display that this year's Axe Prom and Awards Ceremony.

Tickets for this year's axe prom are now sold out, so be sure to join us for the after party at The Dock Ellis bar, taking place immediately after Axe Prom. Get ready for an action-packed weekend!

How It All Started

Wondering how this all came about? By now, you've probably already heard the story. Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Little did they know that this innocent way to pass the time would soon evolve into the creation of a worldwide sport.

Fast forward to 2018, the Backyard Axe Throwing League now has 14 locations across North America (including Toronto, Pickering, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, London, Kitchener, Hamilton, and Calgary in Canada; in addition to Novi, Nashville, Scottsdale and Chicago in the United States) offering up the urban axe throwing experience that we pioneered over 12 years ago.

Top Things To Do In Scottsdale This Winter

Axe Throwing at BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

The Backyard Axe Throwing League is gearing up to open our 14th location later this month in the Valley of the Sun - Scottsdale, Arizona. We're excited to make the state of Arizona our new home, and can't wait to join forces with everyone in our community.

BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Little did they know that this innocent way to pass the time would soon evolve into the creation of a worldwide sport.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League was founded in 2006 in a Toronto backyard, making us the first to pioneer the sport of urban axe throwing. Since then, we have expanded to 14 locations in North America including Toronto, London, Niagara Falls, Calgary, Ottawa, and many more (with even more on the way) - bringing axe throwing to countless guests. Last year, BATL started its expansion into the USA with locations in Nashville, Tennessee; Chicago, Illinois; Novi, Michigan; and finally our newest venue in Scottsdale, Arizona! Don't see your city on the list? Not to worry! We've got more US locations in the works, including Houston, Texas and more.

With a buzzing arts and culture scene, many schools that are ranked top in the state, and endless potential for outdoor activity, it's no wonder that the younger demographic are taking Scottsdale by storm. BATL Scottsdale is located in the downtown area - known as Old Town Scottsdale - which is one of the most unique urban downtown centres in the American Southwest. Its pedestrian-friendly streets are home to world-class art galleries, museums, restaurants and retail shops. When the sun goes down, the area really shines - with world-class bars, restaurants, and nightlife options.

Planning a winter trip to Scottsdale, and wondering what you should pencil into your schedule? We've got you covered!

Plan A Visit To BATL Scottsdale

At BATL Scottsdale, we stand by the belief that throwing an epic party should be fun, simple, and affordable.

Looking for a more casual approach to axe throwing? The Backyard Axe Throwing League offers axe throwing on a walk-in basis at designated times each week. Our coaches will be on hand to instruct those who have never thrown an axe before, and offer tips on technique for more experienced throwers looking to sharpen their skills. Similar to public skating, skiing or swimming – guests throw in a common area with other participants, and may need to make allowance for shared space based on friendly guidance from your BATL coach.

For the die-hards, our leagues are the perfect excuse to get together with friends, make a few new ones and enjoy a little competition.

Head Out To The Golf Course

It’s no secret that Arizona has some of the best golf courses in the country. Combine that with wintertime in Scottsdale, and you’ve got the perfect recipe for a great time. Troon North is a “must play” – a fun and challenging course surrounded by beautiful mountains. Camelback Golf Club, Grayhawk Golf Club, and McCormick Ranch Golf Club are also notable courses. Whether you’re considered a rookie or a pro, a game of golf should definitely be on your list of things to do this winter in Scottsdale.

Hitch A Ride In A Hot Air Balloon

There’s probably no better way to explore the beautiful sights of Scottsdale than by hot air balloon. The crisp, winter air and breathtaking views make this winter activity a real treat. There is plenty of hot air balloon tour companies to choose from, like Hot Air Expeditions or Rainbow Ryders Hot Air Balloon Company. So take your pick, and get ready to soar.

Go To A Hockey Game

Nothing screams winter like hockey - the other Canadian pastime (second to axe throwing, of course). Head out to see an Arizona Coyotes game, located in Glendale a mere 30 minutes from BATL Scottsdale. Cheer on your favourite bruisers and goal scorers on the ice, all the while being surrounded by a desert.

No matter what brings you to the Vally of the Sun this Winter, make the most of it. Enjoy everything Arizona has to offer - and come try out axe throwing with BATL at our newest Scottsdale location and see what all the fuss is about!
