Summer is in full swing, and that means that the Windy City is bustling with loads of options for visitors and residents alike. Like most of the Midwest, the City of Chicago isn’t exactly known for its warm winter weather, so as soon as spring hits and the sun starts to stay out later, the whole city explodes with vibrant color, people, festivals, and fun. Whether you’re taking in a ball game at U.S. Cellular or Wrigley Field, checking out The Bean at Millennium Park, riding the rides at Navy Pier, or shopping on the Avenue of the Americas, Chicago offers a little bit for everybody.

Situated in Illinois and on Lake Michigan, Chicago is among the largest cities in the U.S. Known for its bold architecture, museums, food, famed sports history, and seedy history Chicago is a must-see city for anyone looking to spend some time away from home this summer. With so many activities to do in and around the metropolitan Chicago area during the summer, you might find it hard to narrow it down to just a few, which is why we’ve put together a list of the top things to do this summer in Chicago, including axe throwing at the Backyard Axe Throwing League Chicago.

Plan A Trip To BATL Chicago & Experience Axe Throwing

A visit to BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League is sure to keep you and your friends entertained and leave a lasting impression.

Just north-west of the popular Bucktown and Logan Square areas is where you’ll find BATL Chicago. Fast forward to 2018, the Backyard Axe Throwing League has 15 locations across North America and is the premier axe throwing destination in the world. Take In A Music Festival in Chicago

When it gets warm enough to spend entire days outdoors, there's never a dull weekend in Chicago (a.k.a. the unofficial capital of summer music festivals). Whether you want to join the hordes at Lollapalooza or Pitchfork Festival or stroll through a quiet neighborhood street festival, there are plenty of opportunities to enjoy live tunes this season. Make sure to pack some sunblock, stay hydrated and hit the streets (or the best Chicago parks) to find a summer music festival for you and your friends.

Head To The Beach On Chicago's Beaches

Chicago is blessed with miles and miles of sandy lakefront beaches. Build a sandcastle empire at Foster Beach, cool off at trendy Shore Club at North Avenue Beach, or simply enjoy the view and catch a beach volleyball game at Oak Street Beach. If you're a bit of a thrill-seeker you can rent a jet ski, kayak, paddle board, or fly board at Chicago Water Sport Rentals at 31st Street Harbor.

Visit Wrigley Field & Catch A Game

The Chicago Cubs are already one of the most storied franchises in Major League Baseball (MLB), and coming off a 2016 World Series victory with their sights aimed at another - a ticket at Wrigley Field is a hot commodity these days. Situated in Wrigleyville, Wrigley Field is the second-oldest baseball stadium in the major leagues and a must-see stop on any trip to Chicago. After the game, the streets of Wrigleyville are packed with fans enjoying a walk down the street or stopping in at one of the many bars in the area. If Chicago’s Northside isn’t your thing, head on down to the Southside and takes in a White Sox game at U.S. Cellular Field. Situated just south of The Loop and Chinatown, be sure to grab a hot dog while you’re there – just make sure you don’t ask for any ketchup.

No matter where your interests lie, Chicago has something for everyone. Make sure axe throwing at BATL Chicago is on your list this summer, and enjoy everything Chicago has to offer!

Join A League At BATL London

It’s been 4 years since The Backyard Axe Throwing League joined forces with axe throwing club Tomahawks to bring the BATL style of axe throwing to London, Ontario – and we haven’t looked back since! Over the past 4 years, BATL London has hosted people from all over southwestern Canada and taught them the ways of our sport, and it’s been a complete success. On top of that, we’re is constantly engaging with our community, partnering up with local charities, local sports teams, and more. But more than anything, we're known for our weekly league play. Our name is the Backyard Axe Throwing League, after all. Joining one of our Leagues in London, Ontario is a great way to meet new people and engage in friendly competition along the way. If you've ever been interested in a joining a league but wanted more information, look no further!

How It All Started At The Backyard Axe Throwing League

Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Little did they know that this innocent way to pass the time would soon evolve into the creation of a worldwide sport.

Upon returning home to Toronto, BATL founder and CEO Matt Wilson decided to set up a target in his backyard and invite some friends over to show them just how cathartic throwing a sharp axe into wood could be. A point system was created, and soon enough a group of 8 friends would meet every week and engage in some friendly competition. 8 friends quickly grew to 16, and 16 quickly grew to 32. Before he knew it, Matt was hosting 2 full leagues of a total of 60+ per night in his backyard, not including all the spectators that would stop by to catch a glimpse of our exciting new sport.

It didn't take long before the Backyard Axe Throwing League had outgrown its very own backyard. As you can imagine, putting that many people in a small outdoor space together got very loud very fast, and noise complaints were coming to a frequent issue. Not to mention, word had spread throughout the city so fast that the waitlist to join a league was becoming never ending. In 2011, BATL moved its operations indoors and secured an industrial space in the west end of Toronto. We instantly had leagues running four nights a week, and soon after opened up to private group bookings (perfectly suited for bachelor and bachelorette parties, adult birthdays, corporate team building, or a night out with friends).

Fast forward to 2019, the Backyard Axe Throwing League now has 15 locations across North America offering up the urban axe throwing experience that we pioneered over 12 years ago.

The Establishment Of The National Axe Throwing Federation

The National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) was established in 2016 to service the sport of axe throwing globally, with a vision to create broad and standardized competition amongst players, while providing member support through a mandate to promote universal safety, sportsmanship and competitive protocol. All league play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation umbrella, the worlds foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). Currently sitting at over 4000 league members worldwide, being part of the NATF gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing.

The NATF also hosts yearly tournaments at BATL, most notably the Summer Skills Competition and the National Axe Throwing Championships (NATC) and All-Star Weekend. The next NATC takes place in February of 2019 and is a day-long tournament that will be in its 9th year. The top four members in each league from all NATF members qualify for the pre-tournament, which ends up as a top 128 double elimination tournament. On top of a cash prize, the winner also gets to take home the Wilson Cup - named after BATL founder Matt Wilson.

The Best Axe Throwing Experience In London, Ontario

Even though we (BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League) pioneered the sport of urban axe throwing back in 2006, there are now many options when it comes to wanting to hurl an axe into a wooden target. How do you know you're going to get the best experience? Easy - go with the trusted name. At BATL, the Backyard Axe Throwing League, we've been bringing axe throwing to the city of London, Ontario since 2015. We're constantly engaged in our community and have hosted thousands of new and returning axe throwers over the years. If you're wondering how to get the best axe throwing experience in London, look no further than BATL.

The City of London, Ontario

While the name of the city and the major river located within it (the Thames River) may sound like a carbon copy of another world-class city across the pond, the City of London Ontario is a thriving and unique city that has much to offer. London got its start as a city back in 1855, and since then has grown to become one of Canada’s largest urban areas with its own storied history. Since the end of World War II, London has experienced a growth unprecedented in its history. With the major annexation of 1961, which added 60,000 people to the city, London had grown close to a quarter of a million people in 1976, the one hundred and fiftieth anniversary of its founding. Major physical changes in London’s appearance have occurred. In the old city core, many of the landmarks of the past have gone to be replaced by modern developments – the McClary factory was demolished for Wellington Square, the Hotel London was replaced by the City Centre, the Covent Garden Market was enclosed by the Market Garden Parking Building, and a new Court House was finally constructed on a demolished two-block site.

New suburbs have appeared on the outskirts – Lockwood Park, Sherwood Forest, and Oakridge Acres. The old residential areas became threatened by the overuse of the automobile on streets meant only to accommodate horse and buggy. Recent planning decisions have however been carefully made to ensure that the character and integrity of the old city are maintained. Something which can only result in enhancing the urban environment and in making London a pleasant place for its present and future citizens.

The History of Axe Throwing at BATL

Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Little did they know that this innocent way to pass the time would soon evolve into the creation of a worldwide sport.

Before he knew it, Matt was hosting 2 full leagues of a total of 60+ per night in his backyard, not including all the spectators that would stop by to catch a glimpse of our exciting new sport.

Fast forward to 2015 when the Backyard Axe Throwing League joined forces with newly opened axe throwing venue Tomahawks to become BATL London – bringing our style of urban axe throwing to the masses of London, Ontario – and we haven’t looked back since! Over the past 3 years, BATL London has hosted people from all over South Western Ontario and taught them the ways of our sport, and it’s been a complete success. On top of that, BATL London is constantly engaging with our community, partnering up with local charities, local sports teams, and more.

If you have yet to experience the unique thrill of our sport, what are you waiting for? BATL London offers many ways to get involved with our unique brand of urban axe throwing. Outside of the London area? Not to worry, BATL boats 15 venues across North America, including Toronto, Kitchener, Pickering, Niagara Falls, Hamilton, Ottawa, and Calgary in Canada and Novi, Chicago, Scottsdale, Houston and Nashville in the United States – with more on the way this year.

Beyond that, the city is also a thriving art and cultural hub -, especially in the summer months. Kitchener's cultural highlights include CAFKA, The Open Ears Festival, IMPACT theatre festival, the Multicultural Festival, the Kitchener Blues Festival and KidsPark, many of which are free to the public. Kitchener is also home to venues such as Homer Watson House & Gallery, Kitchener–Waterloo Art Gallery, THEMUSEUM, JM Drama Alumni and Centre In The Square. League Play: It's no secret that the foundations of BATL start with our axe throwing leagues. Thousands strong we show the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots. Our axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. Each season consists of round-robin style tournament play, where you'll throw 28 games against other people in the league, culminating in a top 16 double elimination playoff on week 8. Our leagues are suitable for people of all skill levels, with staff on hand at all times ready to give you tips and tricks to make sure that you're hitting the bullseye. League play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) umbrella, the worlds foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). Fun Things To Do Around University of Waterloo/Laurier

BATL Kitchener

Known as the City of Berlin until 1916, Kitchener Ontario has long been a thriving hub in South Western Ontario. With a population of over 240,000, Kitchener is a big-city full of excitement, while still holding on to its small-town charm. The city’s deep Germanic roots and history are most evident during the annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, the largest celebration of all things Bavarian outside of Germany. But it isn't just been that keeps Kitchener thriving - it's also known as Silicon Valley North. Which only makes sense that it is also home to two prestigious Canadian universities.

Wilfrid Laurier University (commonly referred to as WLU or Laurier) is one of the 2 public universities in Waterloo. Laurier has a second campus in Brantford and offices in Kitchener, Toronto and Chongqing, China. Named in honour of Sir Wilfrid Laurier, the seventh Prime Minister of Canada, the university offers undergraduate and graduate programs in a variety of fields. With over 15,000 students, Laurier is a bustling hub within the Tri-City area.

The University of Waterloo (commonly referred to as Waterloo, UW, or UWaterloo) is the other main public research university in Waterloo. The main campus is adjacent to Uptown Waterloo and Waterloo Park in downtown Waterloo. The University of Waterloo has 40,000 full and part-time students cumulatively between undergraduate and graduate programs - making it one of the largest universities in Canada.

With university classes winding down, you might ask yourself how to best spend your time in and around the Kitchener Waterloo area this summer. Not to worry, BATL has you covered.

The city’s deep Germanic roots and history are most evident during the annual Kitchener-Waterloo Oktoberfest, the largest celebration of all things Bavarian outside of Germany. But it isn't just been that keeps Kitchener thriving - it's also known as Silicon Valley North. It’s quite the title to live up to, but the growing branch of tech companies from Kitchener-Waterloo to Toronto are making it a reality. With offices for Google, Communitech, OpenText, Shopify, and more, Kitchener-Waterloo has become one of Canada’s technology hot spots, and boasts some of the highest success rates in the country for the tech companies that are based here.

Located in the heart of Kitchener-Waterloo, the Backyard Axe Throwing League has delivered axe throwing to the Tri-Cities since 2015. The History of Axe Throwing at BATL

Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Little did they know that this innocent way to pass the time would soon evolve into the creation of a worldwide sport.

Fast forward to 2015 when the Backyard Axe Throwing League joined forces with newly opened axe throwing venue Tomahawks to become BATL London – bringing our style of urban axe throwing to the masses of Kitchner, Ontario and the surrounding area – and we haven’t looked back since! Over the past 4 years, BATL Kitchener has hosted people from all over South Western Ontario and taught them the ways of our sport, and it’s been a complete success. On top of that, BATL Kitchener is constantly engaging with our community, partnering up with local charities, local sports teams, and more.

If you have yet to experience the unique thrill of our sport, what are you waiting for? BATL Kitchener offers many ways to get involved with our unique brand of urban axe throwing. Outside of the Tri-City area? Not to worry, BATL boats 15 venues across North America, including Toronto, Kitchener, Pickering, Niagara Falls, Hamilton, Ottawa, and Calgary in Canada and Novi, Chicago, Nashville, Scottsdale, and Houston in the United States – with more locations on the way this year.

Our private group bookings are perfectly suited for any adult get-togethers – birthdays, bachelor and bachelorette parties, corporate team building, and much much more. Our private events last 2-2.5 hours and are run in the safe and comfortable environment that BATL has become famous for by our expertly trained staff, who also happen to be the best axe throwers in the planet.
