Axe Throwing During Calgary Stampede

by Brian Simmons 0 comments

Calgary General

This year’s Calgary Stampede taking place from 7 – 16 July is shaping up to be one of the biggest and best yet - and the Backyard Axe Throwing League wants to be right there with you.  The entire city of Calgary is going to be abuzz in the weeks to come, and what better way to take a breather from the crowds at Stampede Park than to indulge in axe throwing with a cold beer?  BATL Calgary offers both private event bookings and weekly walk in axe throwing sessions for the entire duration of this year's Stampede.  Lasso some friends and head down to BATL Calgary!

The Backyard Axe Throwing League is the premier axe throwing facility in Alberta, located just 1 block west of Sunridge Mall near Deerfoot Trail & 16thAve. NE.  Our Calgary location is capable of hosting groups from 6 to as large as 150 people, and offers fully licensed bar and kitchen serving local beers, wine and coolers and as well as a delicious shareable food menu from Chef Chris Lorenz.  Whether you’re a local or just in town for a few days, check us out for the perfect activity to cap off Stampede 2017!

Celebrating 2 Years Of Axe Throwing in Calgary

by Brian Simmons 0 comments

Calgary General

It’s been 2 years since the Backyard Axe Throwing League first opened in Calgary - our first venue located outside of Ontario.  We thought the mountain lifestyle seemed like an obvious fit for axe throwing, and we were right!  Over the past 2 years, BATL Calgary has hosted people from all over Western Canada and taught them the ways of our sport, and it's been a complete success.  On top of that, BATL Calgary is constantly engaging with our community, partnering up with local charities, sports teams, and more.

The Backyard Axe Throwing League offers residents of Calgary and southern Alberta many ways to experience the unique thrill of axe throwing for those in the city and surrounding areas.  We offer private bookings for group sizes of 6 people and up (which include a full round robin tournament and make the perfect setting for your bachelor party, bachelorette party, adult birthday, or corporate team building function), public walk in axe throwing, and our world famous weekly axe throwing leagues.  Stop by by BATL Calgary today and experience axe throwing for yourself.  We are excited for the years to come!

Our Axe Throwing Community

Calgary General

It's a well-known fact that our community of axe throwers is the backbone of the Backyard Axe Throwing League.  This past weekend, BATL London hosted a fundraiser for one of their own – an axe throwing league member and single father Eric, who recently suffered tremendous loss in a house fire, destroying nearly everything he owned. Thankfully, both of his children were at school. Though he managed to get out, he was unsuccessful in his attempt to save the family dog.

Through a fundraising tournament, the extended BATL family managed to raise nearly $2000 to help Eric get back on track, as well as clothing for his kids and furniture and house ware donations from other league members. We're not just axe throwers, we're family. And this is just another example of some of the amazing deeds that have been done by members of our community. We're glad we could help, Eric.

BATL Staff Sunday With AJ

Meet AJ Kolanstowski... Kolancowskies... Kolacookies...Umm... the Backyard Axe Throwing League’s Calgary location is proud to be the second home for this sage of the axe throwing lanes, even if we don't actually know how to say his last name.

His unique sense of style and constant droppings of wisdom keep us grounded and focused on the task at hand; teaching people the art of throwing an axe.  A humble man, and yet a miracle of nature, he prefers not to have a crowd while sinking double rotation big axes or his signature move, the Dainty. We're glad to have you on the team AJ, however you pronounce your last name. #batlstaffsunday

Staff Sunday with Kendra from BATL Calgary

Meet Kendra Schembri. She's a pizza addict and axe throwing enthusiast, working at our BATL Calgary location. If she's not eating a large pizza to herself or in the forest with her dog, she's throwing axes.

You've probably seen Kendra at the Calgary location near Sunridge Mall since it opened. Anything from axe throwing running leagues, throwing in the Sunday Black league, or rocking double bits with her fellow BATL fam across Canada against Ireland/Portland - she's there.

Her favourite part about the Backyard Axe Throwing League is the energy it attracts and creates.  How it becomes home for all the odds and ends people all bonding over common ground of axe throwing. If she can make even the slightest difference in your day, she's happy. Shes's not just a thrower, not just an employee, but family. #batlstaffsunday

This week, members of the Backyard Axe Throwing League community went out to paint for a good cause with Prospect Human Services in Calgary.  Prospect Human Services is a local non-profit organization that aims to break down barriers preventing individuals from finding meaningful employment.

BATL has a long history of being involved in charitable work in the communities surrounding all of our axe throwing venues across Canada.  In Calgary, we've been involved with the Calgary Hitmen Community Caring Program, The Calgary Girls Choir, The Keys To Recovery Society and countless others.  Please take a minute and see for yourself all the community programs BATL has been a part of here, and think about getting involved yourself!

BATL Staff Sunday With Julia

"Meet Julia “Carnitas Frescas” Carney.

Bringing a  kitchen knife to an axe fight, the Backyard Axe Throwing League’s first Kitchen Manager also runs Calgary’s Monday Black axe throwing league.  The Queen of the kitchen, this rough and tumble firecracker came to us from the fresh air of the mountains to quickly become a cornerstone of our operation out west at BATL Calgary.

She utilizes her years of training and experience in the restaurant and service world, in combination with the mountain of asses she’s kicked on the rugby pitch, to keep our team on the eternally admirable path of great tasting, high quality, and superbly crafted food.  It’s not always easy, but this wonderful motor mouth keeps the people of Calgary well fed and fueled for axe throwing!  We’re glad to have you in the family, Julia!  #batlstaffsunday

Staff Sunday Featuring Jesse J from Calgary

by BATL 0 comments

Calgary General

Jesse has been a staple in most of BATL Calgary's still brief history, and has made a huge splash in the local axe throwing scene. The heart and soul behind Calgary's after hours trick shots club, he drives others to perfect their throws and is constantly helping cultivate new flair and keeping spirits high with his willingness to help and penchant to inspire.

As a welder and full time gear head, when he's not destroying targets at the Backyard Axe Throwing League, Jesse's taking perfectly good trucks and making them much, much shorter. Apparently, he's so displeased with his 1987 Mazda b2000 that's he replaced almost every piece of it and effectively built a whole new truck.

In a rare feat around here, Jesse and his beautiful wife have just celebrated their 4th anniversary. Congratulations, Jesse!! #BATLstaffsunday
