The Best Axe Throwing Experience In Calgary

BATL (Squibbler)

Being a city of over 1 million people, it’s not unexpected that Calgarians are always trying to find new and exciting ways to spend their free time. Axe throwing seems like a natural fit for a city associated with nature and adventure, but don’t just settle for any old axe throwing experience. BATL is the original and premier axe throwing venue in the world, offering the best experience possible.

BATL Calgary is located just an hour and a half outside of the beautiful surroundings of Banff and is the perfect setting for a unique stag and doe or bachelor/bachelorette party. Almost 4 years ago the Backyard Axe Throwing League Calgary opened up shop in the North East and has been bringing the urban sport of axe throwing to not just Airdrie, Chestermere, Calgary, and the surrounding area but with guests coming from all over Alberta and Western Canada. Located near Sunridge Mall at Deerfoot Trail and 16th Ave. NE. BATL Calgary offers the best indoor axe throwing experience – pioneered by us at the Backyard Axe Throwing League back in 2006.

BATL Calgary | Who We Are

So, what exactly is BATL, and what do we do? From our humble beginnings in 2006 the Backyard Axe Throwing League has steadily grown the sport that we created in our own backyard across not just North America, but across the world. We’ve hosted thousands of new axe throwers across our 15 venues, using our advanced axe throwing statistic software (AxeScores.com) to track totals of millions of axe throws. Even though we’ve brought our sport to the mainstream, there are still many who have yet to experience firsthand the unique thrill of throwing an axe.

The sport of urban axe throwing that has taken the world by storm started just as you might think it would: at a cottage with friends. In 2006, founder and CEO Matt Wilson to a cabin in Southern Ontario with his closest pals and after hours of rain, they had to find a way to keep busy. The group began throwing hatches at a tree, and instantly felt the cathartic release of sinking an axe into softwood.

Axe Throwing League Play: It’s no secret that the foundations of BATL start with our axe throwing leagues. Thousands strong we show the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots. Our BATL Calgary axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. Each season consists of round-robin style tournament play, where you’ll throw 28 games against other people in the league, culminating in a top 16 double elimination playoff on week 8. Our leagues are suitable for people of all skill levels, with staff on hand at all times ready to give you tips and tricks to make sure that you’re hitting the bullseye. League play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) umbrella, the worlds foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). Being part of the NATF also gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing.

Throwing in the National Axe Throwing Federation

Throwing in a league at BATL Calgary means being a part of the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) – the foremost authority in competitive axe throwing standards. The NATF (of which BATL is a founding member) was established in 2016 to service the sport of axe throwing globally, with a vision to create broad and standardized competition amongst players, while providing member support through a mandate to promote universal safety, sportsmanship and competitive protocol. All league play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation umbrella, the worlds foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing. Currently sitting at over 4000 league members worldwide, being part of the NATF gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing.

The NATF also hosts yearly tournaments at BATL, most notably the Summer Skills Competition and the National Axe Throwing Championship (NATC) and All-Star Weekend. The next NATC takes place in February of 2019 and is a day-long tournament that will be in its 9th year. The top four members in each league from all NATF members qualify for the pre-tournament, which ends up as a top 192 double elimination tournament. On top of a cash prize, the winner also gets to take home the Wilson Cup – named after BATL founder Matt Wilson.

Make no mistake when planning your axe throwing experience in Calgary – BATL is the best in the business.
