Re-Opening & COVID-19

Select BATL Locations Re-opening After guidance from government and health authorities, we are pumped to announce that, BATL Scottsdale and BATL Houston are now open. All other BATL locations remain temporarily closed until we get the OK from the appropriate local authorities. We’ll let you know when other locations are scheduled to reopen. We can’t wait to throw with you and to help keep everyone safe we’ve implemented new protocols to fight COVID-19. See below. STEPS WE ARE TAKING TO HELP KEEP EVERYONE SAFE Additional Cleaning and Sanitation: all axes and public areas are thoroughly sanitized before each event. Wipes and Sanitizer: available at sanitization stations and at all axe throwing arenas. Face Masks and Visors: all BATL employees and coaches will be wearing masks. We require all guests to wear masks as well. Hand Washing: all guests will be asked to thoroughly wash their hands before their event. Signing your Waiver: our process has been enhanced so you can sign-in on your own phone, instead of one of our iPads. Physical Distancing: all guests and employees will be asked to respect physical distancing guidelines from health authorities. Private Lanes Only: you will only be with your party – there are no shared lanes with other groups. Additional Coach Training: our awesome coaches are being trained on how best to coach your event given physical distancing requirements. Group Maximums & Limits on Venue Capacity: we will be following local government and health authority guidance for the total number of people allowed in the venue at one time (at this time it is 25% – 50% of total capacity). We will also have maximums on the number of people per group that are allowed. Axe Throwing Lane Separation: your group will not be placed in lanes right beside other parties. Payment: we will be accepting credit and debit payment to enhance safety for guests as well as employees. We will continue to monitor the situation and enhance our processes and share updates to our sanitization policies with you when new information is available. We know that this feels weird and uncertain, but we can get through this together! Reminders Before Coming to BATL – Backyard Axe Throwing League MASKS REQUIRED: please bring your mask. Our coaches and staff will also be required to wear masks. PAYMENT: Make sure you bring a credit card or debit card for payment, to reduce risks for everyone. Axe Throwing 101: A History

Axes and the History of the Axe Axes have been especially prevalent these days, with the emergence of the sport of axe throwing across the world – but it’s a well-known fact that axes have been used for thousands of years for much more than throwing. It’s one of the oldest tools used by mankind, after all. Before the modern axe, the stone-age hand axe was used without a handle – only later to be fastened to a wooden handle. The earliest examples of handled axes have heads of stone with some form of wooden handle attached in a method to suit the available materials and use. Axes made of copper, bronze, iron and steel appeared as these technologies developed. Axes these days are composed of a head and a handle. In folklore, stone axes were sometimes believed to be thunderbolts and were used to guard buildings against lightning, as it was believed (mythically) that lightning never strikes the same place twice. This has caused some skewing of axe distributions. Steel axes were important in superstition as well. It was rumoured that a thrown axe could keep off a hailstorm. Sometimes an axe was placed in the crops with the cutting edge to the skies to protect the harvest against bad weather. An upright axe buried under the sill of a house would keep off witches, while an axe under the bed would “assure male offspring.” Axe Throwing in Entertainment Axes are also predominant in Viking culture, as evidenced when Alex Høgh Andersen, better known as Ivar the Boneless from History TV’s hit show Vikings, visited our BATL Toronto location to film a segment in anticipation of the upcoming new season. It’s no surprise that he was a natural. Most modern axes have steel heads and wooden handles, typically hickory in the US and ash in Europe and Asia, although plastic or fibreglass handles are also common. Modern axes are sorted by use, size and form. Hafted axes with short handles designed for use with one hand are often called hand axes, scout axes, or hatchets – but the term hand axe refers to axes without handles as well. Hatchets tend to be small hafted axes often with a hammer on the backside (the poll). As easy-to-make weapons, axes have frequently been used in combat. Modern Day Axe Throwing It’s been 14 years since the Backyard Axe Throwing League brought urban axe throwing to the masses, using the axe as a tool to bring people together. Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Little did they know that this innocent way to pass the time would soon evolve into the creation of a worldwide sport. BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League Upon returning home to Toronto, BATL founder and CEO Matt Wilson decided to set up a target in his backyard and invite some friends over to show them just how cathartic throwing a sharp axe into wood could be. A point system was created, and soon enough a group of 8 friends would meet every week and engage in some friendly competition. 8 friends quickly grew to 16, and 16 quickly grew to 32. Before he knew it, Matt was hosting 2 full leagues of a total of 60+ per night in his backyard, not including all the spectators that would stop by to catch a glimpse of our exciting new sport. It didn’t take long before the Backyard Axe Throwing League had outgrown its very own backyard. As you can imagine, putting that many people in a small outdoor space together got very loud very fast, and noise complaints were coming to a frequent issue. Not to mention, word had spread throughout the city so fast that the waitlist to join a league was becoming never-ending. In 2011, BATL moved its operations indoors and secured an industrial space in the west end of Toronto. We instantly had leagues running four nights a week, and soon after opened up to private group bookings (perfectly suited for bachelor and bachelorette parties, adult birthdays, corporate team building, or a night out with friends). With 19 locations across North America (including Toronto, Vaughan, Pickering, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, London, Kitchener, Hamilton, and Calgary in Canada; in addition to Novi, Nashville, Scottsdale, Houston, Orlando, Charlotte, and Chicago in the United States – with more on the way!). Since BATL began its expansion, you can find axe-throwing venues popping up all over the world – but only BATL can lay claim to inventing the sport of urban axe throwing. We Are BATL: The Backyard Axe Throwing League From our humble beginnings in 2006 the Backyard Axe Throwing League has steadily grown the sport that we created in our own backyard across not just North America, but across the world. How It All Started The sport of urban axe throwing that has taken the world by storm started just as you might think it would: at a cottage with friends. In 2006, founder and CEO Matt Wilson to a cabin in Southern Ontario with his closest pals and after hours of rain, they had to find a way to keep busy. The group began throwing hatches at a tree, and instantly felt the cathartic release of sinking an axe into softwood. Little did they know this was the start of something huge. Upon returning home to Toronto Matt decided to set up a target in his backyard and invite some friends over to show them just how enjoyable throwing an axe could be. They didn’t need much convincing. Before he knew it, Matt was hosting 2 full leagues of a total of 60+ per night in his backyard, not including all the spectators that would stop by to catch a glimpse of our exciting new sport. 213 Sterling Road It didn’t take long for the crowds of people that had heard of our weekly axe meetings in a downtown Toronto backyard to make us realize that we had outgrown our small space. In 2011, BATL made its first move indoors into a nondescript warehouse in the west end of the city. With Matt still working his job as a bartender 3 days a week, our new location could only host leagues 4 nights a week – and believe it or not, that wasn’t nearly enough. The waitlist continued to grow, and we quickly realized that we had to make this experience available to not just our league members but also the more casual would-be axe thrower. BATL instantly started offering private tournaments, and that’s when axe throwing began to take off. 2013: The Expansion Our only location was fully booked three months in advance year-round, making it obvious to us that the demand for axe throwing wasn’t going anywhere. In December of 2013, BATL opened its second location in a huge space in the east end of Toronto (nearly 5 times the size of our Sterling Road location), and the rest is history. Since then, BATL has ballooned to have 19 locations (including Toronto, Vaughan Pickering, Ottawa, Niagara Falls, London, Kitchener, Hamilton, and Calgary in Canada; in addition to Novi, Nashville, Scottsdale, Houston, Orlando, Charlotte and Chicago in the United States – with more on the way!). BATL now employs over 500 expertly trained axe gurus that teach over 300,000 people a year how to have an amazing time while throwing an axe. Get Ready For BATL Austin

Located in Central Texas on the eastern edge of the American Southwest, Austin is the capital of the state of Texas, the Lone Star State. The city dates back to the 1830s, when the first Anglo-American settlers arrived in the area, then in what was part of Mexico. Austin has both scenic, natural views and the hustle and bustle of big city life. There are a few things everyone knows about Austin: Austin keeps things weird and it is considered the Live Music Capital of the World, it’s known worldwide for its unique food scene, and it’s home to one of the largest bat populations in the world. All that was missing? BATL. We’re thrilled to announce that our 20th North American venue will be opening soon in Austin, bringing axe throwing to the masses. We’ll be opening in major shopping hub The Linc, and joining BATL Houston to become our 2nd location in the lone star state. So why should you get excited for our arrival? Our unique style of urban axe throwing has been covered widely by national media, and soon residents of Austin and the surrounding area of Round Rock, Lost Creek, Bluff Springs, Wells Branch, Daffan, Pilot Knob, and George Town will be able to enjoy the same experience that we’ve become renowned for across North America. Our Expansion Into The US In 2017, BATL stepped across the border to open our very first location in the United States. We partnered with Throw Nashville to bring BATL’s brand of urban axe throwing to Music City, and that would mark the beginning of our US growth. Shortly after, we teamed forces with Thunderbolt Axe Throwing to bring BATL’s brand of urban axe throwing to the Chicago Masses. It instantly caught on in the windy city, and BATL Chicago has been a driving force in the community or Irving Park ever since. In 2018, we opened the doors to BATL Novi, bringing axe throwing to metro Detroit. Finally, in December of 2018, BATL Scottsdale opened to the public, bringing axe throwing to the Valley of the Sun. The Phoenix greater area now as the ability to experience the unique thrill provided by axe throwing, and we’re excited to begin to grow the sport. Weekly League Play: It’s no secret that the foundations of BATL start with our axe throwing leagues. Thousands strong we show the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots. BATL Austin will be no exception. Our axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. Each season consists of round-robin style tournament play, where you’ll throw 28 games against other people in the league, culminating in a top 16 double elimination playoff on week 8. Our leagues are suitable for people of all skill levels, with staff on hand at all times ready to give you tips and tricks to make sure that you’re hitting the bullseye. League play falls under the International Axe Throwing Federation (IATF) umbrella, the world’s foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). Being part of the IATF also gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing. Meet Blake, a coach from BATL Chicago. Blake is originally from Rhode Island but moved to Chicago in 2009 – and when he heard that we were opening a new venue in the Windy City, he knew it’s something he had to be a part of. Outside of work he’s a nerd of all trades and puts his pop culture, TV, and movie expertise to good use writing for a few nerdy websites. When he’s not axe throwing or writing, Blake spends his time as any Chicagoan would by enjoying bars, restaurants, and – much to the chagrin of many – making any visitors to Chicago try the one and only Chicago drink; Jeppson’s Malort. BATL In Austin, Texas

Austin is hardly a city that needs any introduction. Ranked as the top city to live in America for the past 3 years in a row, it’s no longer a secret. The capital of Texas, Austin has long been known as a hotbed of arts and culture. More recently the food scene has been making Austin world known, and it’s also become a major hub for technology, startups and innovation (dubbed “Silicon Hills”). All it was missing was BATL, who was recently mentioned in The New York Times. We’re thrilled to have a location in Austin, bringing axe throwing to the masses. We opened in major shopping hub The Linc, and austin.eater.com recently featured us on their blog: “BATL will serve alcoholic drinks like beer, wine, coolers, and cider. It will also offer a menu of food options from a local restaurant, which hasn’t been named yet but will include items like pizza and burgers. BATL will have coaches on-site to walk guests through the axe-throwing process, and per a representative, bar staff will monitor consumption to ensure a safe and fun environment.” Wondering what we’re all about? Look no further. BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League It’s been 14 years since the Backyard Axe Throwing League brought urban axe throwing to the masses, using the axe as a tool to bring people together. Back in 2006, a group of friends were bored at a cottage outside of Toronto and decided to throw an axe at a stump. Little did they know that this innocent way to pass the time would soon evolve into the creation of a worldwide sport. Upon returning home to Toronto, BATL founder and CEO Matt Wilson decided to set up a target in his backyard and invite some friends over to show them just how cathartic throwing a sharp axe into wood could be. A point system was created, and soon enough a group of 8 friends would meet every week and engage in some friendly competition. 8 friends quickly grew to 16, and 16 quickly grew to 32. Before he knew it, Matt was hosting 2 full leagues of a total of 60+ per night in his backyard, not including all the spectators that would stop by to catch a glimpse of our exciting new sport. Before long, we had to move our operations indoors – which led to opening 10 locations across Canada between 2015-2018. That was just the beginning. Axe Throwing Expansion Into The US In 2017, BATL stepped across the border to open our very first location in the United States. We partnered with Throw Nashville to bring BATL’s brand of urban axe throwing to Music City, and that would mark the beginning of our US growth. Shortly after, we teamed forces with Thunderbolt Axe Throwing to bring BATL’s brand of urban axe throwing to the Chicago Masses. It instantly caught on in the windy city, and BATL Chicago has been a driving force in the community or Irving Park ever since. In 2018, we opened the doors to BATL Novi, bringing axe throwing to metro Detroit. BATL Scottsdale is open to the public, bringing axe throwing to the Valley of the Sun. The Phoenix greater area now has the ability to experience the unique thrill provided by axe throwing, and we’re excited to begin to grow the sport. After that, we opened up shop in the Lone Star state, making Houston Heights our first BATL location in Texas. At the start of 2020, BATL joined forces with Axe Club of America, opening up 3 new venues in North Carolina – bringing our total to 10 venues across North America! Now, we’re ready to bring the fun to Austin – and we’re just getting started, with more US locations planned in the next year. What To Expect At BATL Austin Free Axe Throwing: Just like every other BATL location, BATL Austin will be giving the area a taste of axe throwing leading up to our opening. Keep your eyes peeled for an announcement for our open house, giving you the perfect opportunity to learn how to throw an axe with friends & family for free! League Play: It’s no secret that the foundations of BATL start with our axe throwing leagues. Thousands strong we show the power of being good to each other, using the axe as a tool to build community inspired by our backyard roots. BATL Austin will be no exception. Our axe throwing leagues run for 8 weeks, completely under the guidance of our resident axe gurus. Each season consists of round-robin style tournament play, where you’ll throw 28 games against other people in the league, culminating in a top 16 double elimination playoff on week 8. Our leagues are suitable for people of all skill levels, with staff on hand at all times ready to give you tips and tricks to make sure that you’re hitting the bullseye. League play falls under the National Axe Throwing Federation (NATF) umbrella, the world’s foremost governing body of the sport of axe throwing (of which BATL is a founding member). Being part of the NATF also gives you access to the most advanced statistic tracking in the sport of urban axe throwing. Walk-In Axe Throwing Sessions (BATL Casual): If you’re looking for a casual way to get involved with the sport of axe throwing, all BATL venues offer public walk-in sessions (no reservations required) every weekend. It’s the perfect way to test the water when it comes to axe throwing, with little commitment. Our expert coaches are on hand to guide you the whole way, so whether you’re new to the sport or looking to hone in on your skill BATL, The Backyard Axe Throwing League Austin has you covered. Private Axe Throwing Event Booking (BATL Premium): BATL Austin will offer premium private axe throwing bookings for groups of 5 and up lasting for 1.5 hours. You can be sure that you’ll get the experience that BATL has become famous for: the best one on one instruction from our skilled and friendly staff members, followed by a round-robin style tournament and single elimination playoff – all orchestrated by our staff, leaving you with nothing to do but throw axes and enjoy the company of your guests. These parties are perfectly suited to any adult gatherings (bachelor/bachelorette parties, corporate team building, adult birthdays, etc) and many BATL locations offer complete bar and food services, which means even less planning for you.
